How to tax EVs

Road wear is exponential by inflation pressure and vehicle weight. 2 6000 lb vehicles with 4 tires at 80 psi wear the road more than bigger tires at. 30
.

EV owners are going to have to pay Federal Highway taxes like gasoline cars do at 18.5 cent a gallon. It's unjust at the present time that EV owners are not paying this tax to use our roadways. However they will, one thing at a time.
False, EV owners already pay more the 19 cents tax and in the future will have to pay until it hurts.

Our ACTUAL federal road expenditures are only about 6% paid for by private cars based on the reality of collections versus the size of the shortfall and this has been the case for at least 20 years. (.gov throws in lots of 10’s of billions in there from general funds every year)

Our local ma roads jockey said every man woman and child owed $10,000 a year if we expected to repair roads and infrastructure in the state.

Can’t always get what you want (and if you do you might be extraordinarily unhappy about it)

Those of us who oppose nearly all tax increases do so because we have been burned by state “white whales” like roads where increasing funding has no affect on road quality.

Flat rate fee if they want it at registration . Everything else is costly to implement, track and enforce. If yearly state inspections already happen then significantly easier to record mileage and maybe weight it.

Don’t create more government and process.

Flat fee imo is the only way to go. Fair? No one likes to pay tax or insurance, to most people both are unfair.

1.Collecting taxes on public charging stations would be a small step towards fairness.

2. The federal government may not be able to impose a flat tax on vehicles because the constitution prohibits it from collecting property taxes.

False EV owners are not paying federal excise tax on EVs
Please explain how you think they are.

For non commercial vehicles - If we as a society wont accept monitoring at any level then I'd like to see a weight based fee.

This way each person bears the cost of their relative wear on roads.

but a vehicle doing 5k a year causes less wear than the same doing 50k. And then there's driving style.

Taxing the fuel seems to account best for relative wear, as heavier vehicles tend to need more fuel aswell.

Of course, that doesn't solve the EV problem; taxing them fairly, not too much or not too little.

On the other hand, road infrastructure serves an economic purpose mostly, so maybe they should be funded differently to make it fair. Like with a general sales tax

I think the Feds need to get with the states and figure this one out because most states are taking the equivalent chunk already. With the recently proposed plan from the Fed side, it would see the EV driver paying $450 a year combined in road fees. How the Federal level decided on $250 is beyond me.

This is why I mention monitoring, or maybe a better word is reporting.

If we accept monitoring/reporting then we can index with miles and weight.

If we cant accept reporting then the best way becomes an average mileage # and a weight index.
