Cr*P, I missed that thread yesterday

Hey, it's still great news!

I agree. The article's kind of misleading, though. The first thing mentioned is the antenna, but much lower down, they note that overall, MPG is up from about 18 to over 20 on GM's full size 4WD SUVs. That's certainly noteworthy and regarding the antenna, it makes a great deal of sense to do whatever's reasonable to reduce drag.

Im always afraid my antenna will get caught on a tree limb or something... Its pretty nice (unless the glass embeded antennas somehow allow more radio waves to beam into my head

I saw that too!!! What laughing stock!!!

This will surely break our dependence on Forign oil. I'll bet we are going to have Arnold tell OPEC 'Hasta la Vista' by the end of the month!

I'll bet one could increase mileage that much by breaking wind in the direction opposite travel!

Automakers jack up mpg PDQ

"At General Motors, engineers are eliminating the radio antenna mast in the next-generation Chevrolet Tahoe being unveiled Tuesday. By imbedding the antenna in window glass instead, the full-size SUV will save a tiny-but-every-bit-counts 0.001 miles per gallon of gas."

Tahoe buyers will appreciate that

I personally like rear window antenna because it won't cause problem in carwash and looks nicer. On the other hand, I don't listen to radio so I have no idea how is the reception. Might as well remove it all together.

This is no shocker. GM was imbedding antennae in glass since the 60's.

Nissan has thier diversity set-up.

And many euro manf's are going to the shark fin for cell/radio/sat combination. (I'm sure all will follow.)

the windshield antennas of the 70s (Gm type) were nothing more than a simple dipole. Highly directional. Horrible in city areas where reflected signals interferred. Went back to masts to fix, and masts were cheaper.

Rear window antennas of today are a different design ("diversity") they have none of the directional issues of the older dipole types. They are rear window mounted (imho) because they have a LOT more traces inside and can cause visual distractions.

I doubt it was the mileage increase that gave GM incentive to get rid of the antenna. There must be some other design agenda driving this move.

GM will put a positive spin on anything they do to make the public think they have our best interests in their heart.
