How To Identify Country Of Final Assembly From VINS

Here is a screen shot of a way to determine the country of final assembly for different vehicles. Whether you are strolling the dealer's lot or if you want to check a vehicle you already own, just take a look at the VIN.

That chart works when the OEMs follow the rules. They don't always follow the rules.

When BMW's Greer SC plant started up, they initially assigned W-prefixes to their vehicles.

Only later, and after being chided did they switch to the 4USC numbers.

My old Volvo 740 was also assembled in the Ghent, Belgium plant, but had a YV1 number.
 
I've owned,
W, Y, 3, 1, 4.

Interesting that the Honda and Toyota )CR-V l, Venza) are both US made.

W used to mean (W)est Germany
