How To Extend The Life Of Your New Car's Engine - Oil Change Hack

The factory fill oil in at least some cars is meant to be changed out that early, all it does is coat the inside of the engine with enough metal (moly, boron or what have you). Once that's done you drain it and replace with whatever is the usual service fill oil.

0w8 and engines designed for "love in a canoe" oils (*ing close to water, as Terry Pratchett explained) are probably the new reality for a lot of cars.

I read an industry white paper several years back where a big city bus fleet in CA did a long-term longitudinal study with different oil change regimens. They firmly showed engine longevity really benefitting from at least one very early oil change.

I unfortunately did not bookmark it. If anyone recalls this study I’d sure like to track it down again to reference.

There are sae reports that says the same for an early changes for differentials.

A year ago a Kia Carnival came into the shop with 11,000 miles on its first oil change. I think I posted about it here, most said that was A OK...they were just going a little past the factory recommended interval.

With my own cars (new which is very rare) I usually do a 700 mile interval, change, then a 2,000-3,000 mile interval, change...and then normal intervals after that. But that didn’t help me with my last vehicle (2018 Silverado), that thing consumed oil immediately anyway...around a quart every 5,000 miles from day one.

Why he looking like that
I’ve got to say, the way he talks is somewhat distracting for me. It’s too much voice inflection, too much facial expression. And I’ve seen him talk with other folks on his videos, he dominates so strongly that I find THAT distracting too.

But the guy knows his stuff. I’m just trying to picture this guy at weekly production meetings at his former employers...what the heck is that like if you’re sitting around a table with this guy?

I think there really isn't much break in on a modern vehicle... not with CNC machining and the quality lubes we have nowadays.
but changing the oil regularly does make a difference over the long haul. The thing with that is how many years and miles does it take to prove it. I think most people get tired of their vehicle before their vehicle tires out.
