That always excites the kitty
Have the cage ready with the door open. Hold your car such that it can’t see the cage. In one full swoop turn put the cat through the door and close.
Failing that, buy a bigger pair of work boots.

A friend of mine has a very nervous 79 lb. English Bulldog. She gives him Benadryl to calm his nerves. I have never heard of this before, but it works.

Maybe falconer's gloves.
Put the cat in the carrier backwards, rear end first. It makes it harder to fight you when you do it that way.
Other suggestion, get a clamshell type pet carrier, and take it apart, then you can just set the cat inside normally. Of course the challenge then becomes keeping him from jumping out.

For many years I ran a Pet Transportation service, helping people ship their cats and dogs across the country or around town. I worked closely with a number of veterinarians. There were many times that we used Acepromazine to calm the kitties.
A recent client has a very nervous cat, and the cat needs daily meds. She uses pill pouches to disguise and hide the pills, and her cat just gobbles them up. Might be worth looking into.
Some cats are just not going to let you do that. We have a cat who is very sweet until you try and pick her up, then she turns into hell cat. Solution? We don't pick her up. If she ever gets sick and needs to go to the vet? Too bad. She'll just have to tough it out. There is no way we are ever getting her into a pet carrier.

You'd need more than a towel if you tried to take ME in to get fixed lol.
Our feral also doesn't use nails actively, but if he's panicking he doesn't really know he's doing it. Haven't seen him in over a week though, don't think I ever will again.
I leave a couple pet carriers around in different rooms, and they all tend to go into it to take a nap every now and then. Initially, I encouraged them by leaving cap nip treats in the carriers, but this'll tend to work more for male cats. Sometimes I close the door while they're in it and move the carrier to a different room before opening it back up again, and now they're pretty used to that happening. It does scare them a bit once I step outside the house with them in the carrier, but eventually they got used to that too with multiple vet visits over the years.
That would be my top tip too, use the cat carrier as their every day napping place.

Guess who showed up yesterday, withered away to almost nothing... I was so sure he had bit the bullet, but he just went for a walkabout for over 2 weeks...
Benadryl. Works like a champ.
How much Benadryl do you give a 10 pound cat and how much before you wan to take him to the vet?
No on the Benadryl. The question has been answered, "Gabapentin". You will get it from the Vet in an oral applicator. You may still need to use the towel method to get the Cat in the cage.
For dogs, Trazodone works pretty well. Both of these meds are Human meds, but you can get them easily at your vet.
