The manual for my Honda Ridgeline says that dexron 3 could be used as a temporary replacement for the atf. How temporary are they talking about? Would dex 3 hurt the trans if left in for normal change interval? Spec fliud is z1.

A long time. Many thousands of miles. Probably forever.

The death of these transmissions isn't directly related to the fluid, but Z1 isn't exactly a robust fluid either. However, under warranty you do want to use a fluid that is Z1 rated.

I used Mercon 5 since it says that it is z1 compliant, and its at least a semi synthetic according to the bottle. Cant tell any difference in shift quality. Oh yeah, the Honda dealer wanted 9 bucks a qt for z1. Walmart has merc 5 for 4 bucks a qt.

I wouldn't do it. Shop dealers for z-1 by the case. I was able to get it for about $58
