How reliable is Toyota KDSS?

Knock on wood. No problem with the KDSS on my 2010 Trail.
I really like the way my truck handles on-road and off and I appreciate that I’ve got it.
I didn’t want it originally due to the added complexity but I could not find a Trail without it back then.

XREAS is basically a set of self-adjusting shocks with fluid moved around by two central (not fillable) accumulators/reservoir. it’s kind of like AHC (hydromat) suspension without load leveling, height adjustment or any of the things that make a hydraulic suspension cool.

by design everything but the shocks is disposable and has to be fully replaced

Well...I think you were about 100,000 miles short of finishing the break in on a 4 Runner...so...
Bought a travel trailer. The short wheelbase makes it a deal killer to tow a travel trailer of any length. So-it got traded in on a pickup. Much more comfortable ride BTW.

At which point it makes it more feasible to go with conventional suspension or coil overs due to cost. Much discussion about this on any 4Runner forum.

There is an X-REAS system on the Limited 4Runners.

There is a KDSS system available on select TRD models. The TRD Pro not included.

The guys in that link don't even understand the system. Of course that link was from 16 years ago, when the systems were a recent development.

KDSS does not disconnect the swaybars. It holds the swaybars in place to develope roll stiffness on-road, and lets the swaybars move without developing roll stiffness to improve axle articulation off-road.

I love my KDSS on my 2021 4Runner. I did my first oil change this past weekend and I was shocked how thick the front sway bar is. I suppose it gives the best of both worlds with this setup.

Thank you BITOG. Our dealer has our exact 4R minus the KDSS and I was considering trading ours in. I like simple and I just wasn’t seeing it with KDSS. I’ve decided to stick with it.

The advice on purchasing a Miata instead is interesting.
