How purge old oil from filter while mounted???

There have been a few other threads like this concerning reusing the oil filter in some manner. I just don't get it. We are all car loving folks who love oil and we all know better. Just change the darn filter with every oil change. It does not add that much to the cost and it eliminates some dirty oil (nothing you can do about what's in the engine but why add up to another qt to this by not changing the filter??) from contaminating your fresh oil. PLUS - you don't know the condition of the filter. It could be plugged up and running in bypass not filtering any oil. Is this really a risk you want to take for a few dollars??

Well, GM seems to think that their oil life monitor can ignore it until it feels like telling you to change both. Suppose you just say that you're going to change the oil when you feel like it ..and then change the oil and filter when the thing tells you to?

That's what most people do here ..except that they're changing both way too soon (for those who meet such criteria to begin with).

That is, take a typical OLM equipped car ..and a comparable car w/o OLM. Driven side by side, both owners will probably change out both too early.

Essentially, it comes down to who is choosing where to spend and waste their money. Cheap oil ..cheap filters ..who cares? Cheap oil ..expensive filter ..get your money's worth out of the filter ..or why bother? Expensive oils and expensive filters that aren't necessary or are not going to be used to some sensible level of utility?? ...how much waste satisfies your peace of mind quotient??

It's a case of waste management.

I can't believe someone on this site would suggest running an engine with no oil.

You fellows that run your engine for more than a couple of seconds with no oil are f***ing crazy.

Read some of the used oil analysis here. Most of the used oil is in pretty good condition. Reusing 1/4 quart of the old oil is not that big of a problem. A filter change every second oil change is fine as long as you are not running extreme OCI's.

Gary - I agree that an oil filter can go the distance (or atleast should) and I do run extended changes myself. I just disagree with reusing the filter when you're there changing the oil anyhow.

Wow! That would be excellent, a drainable filter, but would only work with filters that mount straight down. Maybe can drill a hole at bottom edge and plug with RTV and a screw?

If I were to go completely OCD about oil filter life I would instrument the bypass so I knew when it went into bypass and base my filter change interval on that.

For now, the OLM in my cars has me running my oil longer than I would have before, so changing the filter at each oil change is more reasonable than it used to be.
 
you could hook up a remote filter head with two pressure sensors with gauges and monitor delta p. then you could monitor filter condition in real time and change the filter at the exact second it was full.
 
Too much work. Think the original Bob the Oil Guy ran his Escort for many miles with not filter, just a cap screwed on that allowed the oil to flow back into the engine. Had some used oil analysis etc as I recall and no problems. The no filter tread is out there somewhere in the archives, maybe 2001 or 2002.

I should try that. The engine has 161,000 miles, but the rest of the truck will die long before the engine goes because of rust, so this might be a good chance to try the no filter option.
