Oddly enough IIRC the entire oil charge was pre added to the compressor crankcase when these vehicles were first built.

Yes, most new or reman compressors come with a full charge of oil in the sump. It'll distribute throughout the (hopefully flushed) system as the system runs.

Note: not all compressors come with oil in them, and the amounts can vary by brand and application. If you're installing a new/reman compressor, you need to find out how much oil is the in the compressor- and what kind. Adjust from there.

Correct, pumps can come with esters,PAG, etc you need to know what kind you have, drain the oil that comes in the comp and add back with your known type.

i never use the oil shipped in the comp, never.

I gotta disagree with you there.

Compressors are USUALLY shipped with the appropriate type and quantity of refrigerant oil. But it is your responsibility to confirm that what you just bought does in fact have the correct type and quantity of oil- it will USUALLY say on a sticker on the compressor or in a tag inside the box. But not always.

9 outta 10 times, if you're just dumping the oil and putting your own stuff in... you're just wasting time and oil. It's usually right. But you HAVE to make sure before you bolt the thing together... or it'll bite you in the [censored]. I speak from experience.

Also some systems will require more oil than what's in the compressor. In those cases, I generally dump the few more ounces of oil into the high pressure hose (or pretty much anywhere on the high side that's convenient). Some will disagree with me here- but it doesn't matter a whole lot as the oil will be distributed throughout the system pretty soon no matter where you dump it in. My reason for dumping it in the high pressure side is to avoid slugging liquid oil through the compressor.

And that's one problem I have with how the originator of this thread put his system together. But he must have pumped the oil through well enough by hand, 'cause it sounds like it worked. But I wouldn't have done it that way.

I never do you can't trust the shippers oil is cheap i got gallons of Pag in hand, heck some comps i've got in had no oil at all or 1/2 oz!!

I guess that's true in a sense. I am ASSUMING that the oil in the compressor is in fact the type and quantity that the label says. And you know what those assumptions will do for you.

It's something to think about.
