How much of a problem is this?

I own a 'j-body' 2002 Cavalier, with the ubiquitous 2.2 OHV engine. On a forum for j-body owners, there was this post on oil:

"Good info. Along those lines, there's something else about oil these days. Until about 3 years ago, all oils contained Zinc Phosphates and Magnesium alloys. Those additons to oils made the older cams & lifters live longer. With lots of engines these days using roller valve train parts, that older combo of additions isn't nearly as critical. Older motors such as the old 2.2 still have the "flat Tappets" and they need those additives to keep from ruining the cam/lifters. The good old EPA, auto company's and oil company's got together to meet the newer emissions standards and one way the oil company's helped was reducing or eliminating these older additives. On newer cars, that's not a problem as they were designed to not need it anyway. On older cars, it's a real problem. If your car is older and still has flat tappet valve lifters, there's a couple of things you can do to return to what your motor needs. (1) is to buy/use oil made for Diesel engines. (2) use something like the GM oil additive for severe conditions.
What happens is that the Zinc & other additives creates a film over the camshaft, and that protects the older flat tappet lifters. If it's not present, a cam failure / lifter failure will occur and flat camshaft lobes will result. It's become a BIG issue with the people restoring older cars, and lots of racers that build 350's..etc the "old" way. Comp Cams, Crane Cams and GMPP cams have all had lots of problems in this area in the past 3 years. Mainly due to the oil's reduced additive pack."

I know that the 2.2 in my car is an 'older' design of motor, but should I be concerned about using newer, SM-ratd oils with reduced levels of zinc in them? Or is this advice really only for 'much older', high performance engines?

I'm really not trying to be paranoid about this, I know that my engine will probably last just fine on a diet of modern SM oil. I'm just wondering if a bit of 'extra' protection will help with engine life....

Nope. It's one of those housewife's tale to stir fear.

YOu can use anything you want from SL to SM and what-not.

YOu do not need any additives (subjectively) or things to fortify the motor oil with ZDDP and the likes.

If you still have second thoughts on this subject, go get some heavy duty diesel oil (HDEO) then.

afraid I have to disagree with Quest on this one. We know the additives have been reduced from VOA's and used oil analysis. While there is some disagreement if this is significant my feeling is that it is significant. I would use the Diesel rated oils in any older engine like my TR3 with the flat tappets. I think Delo 400 is about as good as it gets in diesel oils and it comes in 15w40 and 30 weight also. 30 weights are hard to fine but available.
 
To qualify for the SM/GF-4 rating, an oil has to pass the Sequence IIIG test. This tests consist of a Buick 3800 V6 retrofitted with pre-86'? flat tappet valvetrain, that is flogged at 125 bhp, 3,600 rpm for a 100 hrs with the oil temp held at 302°F. Maximum camshaft lobe plus lifter wear must be less than .0024".

Given this, I'm of the suspicion that most cam failures are due to incorrect lubrication during breakin'. However, since ZDDP is depleted with use, I can see where hi-po cams and springs may run into problems if anything but short (severe schedule) OCIs are employed. Here's where HDEOs may give you some insurance.

By the way, I thought those 2.2 OHV engines had roller lifters? If it does, none of this should concern you.

Great info on the Sequence IIIG test. Where could someone find information and the testing sequences for the GF-4 standards? You just gave the best information I have seen all day.
 
I've done a bit of research since posting this, and have found that this forum is really split on this topic, as demonstrated above.....

I can get 10w30 diesel oil where I am. Canadian Tire has a house brand of it that is SJ-rated. I have also found Rotella 10w30 oil at my local shell station....so I do have some options...

Your Cavalier engine was designed to run with the 1000 ppm max phos levels of GF-3 oils, and the SL API service spec for the year 2002.

Current GF-4/SM oils are limited to 800 ppm max but normally include a secondary anti-wear add to make up for the reduced level of ZDDP.

And a majority of the GF-4 qualification tests are run on a GM 3.8L V6, with the older style valve train design.

If I were running a Crane cam & had a heavy foot, I'd be concerned about ZDDP levels in SM oils. With a Cavalier, I'd find something else for the top of my worry/anxiety list.

Any type of racing formulated oil, such as Valvoline VR-1 series, will be loaded with ZDDP, but you can't go extended drains on them.
 
The 2.2L 4 cylinder used in the cavalier was switched to roller lifters in 1994. So all 2.2 engines from 1994 on have roller lifters so don't worry about the oil you will be fine.
 
Thanks, Ironduke! I wasn't sure if the 2.2, because it is a cheaper, older design of engine, was switched to roller lifters at all. Knowing that it is, there's no need to worry!

I think this is the key statement. I have read about guys having problems with their big V8's in their boats, and some high performance engine rebuilds. So, I think the new oils can cause problems with cam wear, but only in aftermarket applications.
