How much is Overfilling?

That reference point could be a chain link in a timing chain that has a tendency to "squish" the little oil molecule as it comes through. If the same little oil molecule is able to pass through less frequently, because he has to wait for more of his buddies to pass through the chain link first, than he gets sent through the chain link fewer times during an OCI.

Why does Merkova talk to us like children?

Because when he talks to us as if we are adults, we don't listen!

If the bottom of the crank is rotating through the surface of the pool and no one is inside to hear it, does it make a sound? Would you hear it? Or would it likely show foam whipped up via the dipstick?

Overfilling raises the center-of-gravity so your car will lean more in the corners and may become unstable. I think I'll overfill like flatland until the rockers start churning oil.

Overfilling is just adding more weight to your car

My car calls for 3.7qts for an oil & filter change. I put in 3.5 and not 4.0 - leaves me right at the full mark on the dipstick and then I have the 1/2 qt for my next OCI. By trusting the Mazda engineers and their dipstick design, I've gotten to 226k miles w/o oil burning or leaks so far [knocks on wood].

I don't mean to speak in a condescending tone at all, if that's the way you interpret my posts, then may I offer my apologies? What I was attempting to do is answer the OP's question and to also express my theory of oil volume in a manner that could be understood by everyone in a fundamental way.

It's just a theory of mine; I don't expect you or anyone else to accept my theory as fact, but just to mull over it for a minute or two and then make up your own mind as to whether or not it makes sense.

I'm with Merkava 4 on this.

I've been slightly overfilling my 1987 Jetta (~ 1/3 liter) for years. More oil means the oil doesn't get as beat up.

I was joking..

Depends on the car, I guess. I overfill our Saturn sometimes, but it burns it off fast enough not to matter much.

On our Windstar, and a few other Ford's we've owned, the dipsticks looked like this:

ADD 1 QT. -->|XXXXXXXX|
And the owners manuals have stated that as long as the oil level is not over the F in Full, you are ok. I would imagine there is some leeway given to the capacity so an accidental overfill won't damage the engine.

Like I said, I have seen oil usage in my brand new car yet I believe in my heart of hearts that it was still the best oil to follow up on the FF of Exxon Mobil. Now, I am more concerned about usage then when my car was initially breaking in! To me, adding oil is the car equivalent of taking/giving a few vitamins every now and then(or eat fruits and veggies for others)- not essential for survival but an enhancement nonetheless

Also, as some have stated earlier..a little more oil(and Tranny oil too presumably) may help in extreme turns (and presumably subsequent rapid acceleration following a successful turn)

GM recommends overfilling by a quart because of oil starvation issues in high-G turns and braking. That's one of the reasons they cite for the dry sump on the C6 Z06.

I overfill our Xterra by half a quart for peace of mind because it only has a 3.5 quart capacity. Half a quart is an extra 14% in that car!

My 07 Caliber call for 4.5 Quarts. I have used 5 quarts on the last 2 oil changes w/o issues. With the size of most oil pans, 1/2 a quart probably doesn't increase the level more than a 1/4 inch - if that.
