Weird that the Mazda used half what the Subaru did. The Mazda used 60% of what my 4.8L v8 reports and the Subaru used 17% more than my truck.
However, they probably used a significant amount of gas pulling away from the pump and then back over to it compared to just idling. I guess this wasn't supposed to be exact though, just to give you a rough idea.

how do you know how often the AC cycles in a hour, wouldn't it be random unless you turn the AC to 'hang meat'

No matter how you slice it, the fuel mileage on an idling engine is less than zero.

Per scangauge my 2006 accord 2.4 idles at 0.27gph with the AC compressor off. And, 0.39gph with the AC compressor on.

But, as mentioned already, there’s no way to know how much time the compressor will be on vs off.
