You guys that are only paying $10 or $15 a month for basic cable - how? The cheapest cable i can get (basic) is $45.00 per month.

Landline-$15/month (with tax its probably about $20. Includes all custom calling features like Call Waiting, Caller ID, Call Forwarding, Three-Way, etc. Courtesy of my dad's AT&T employee discount. May end soon once SBC merger is complete)

Internet-$6.50/month with Joi Internet, now bought out by Earthlink. Earthlink will honor the price until end of the contract (Dec 05), but then the bill will go up to $10/month.

No Cell Phone or Cable TV.

How good of service are you getting for your $40 landline? I escaped the $40 lousy service of my Grace Fergerson Screen Door, Airline, and Phone Company by going with internet phone, VOIP from www.vonage.com. I am not sure it would work with your wireless internet. You could check. I have full local phone service plus unlimited long distance for $27 a month. Voice quality is better than my old land line. Vonage is available anywhere you have hot running ethernet. Being internet, the phone company's friends in the STATE capital can't protect them.

If I didn't have the business, I'd lose the land line. We don't watch a lot of TV, but the channels the wifey and I like are pretty much all cable (ESPN, HGTV, Discovery, History Channel, TLC, SciFi, Cartoon Network)so that's a cost we can't really cut.

I considered switching to Digital Phone through TIme Warner, but they already get enough of my money and I think Vonage offers better price and performance.

I have Verizon as my local telco. The service is 1/2 step above hand crank phones but they were probably more reliable.

I'm sure I'd have difficulty with voip although I may try it if I can for free. My wireless internet service gives me 500Kpbs nominal. As high as 650k sometimes, as low as 250k in the evenings when all the children are on the system.

And guess who my internet provider is? The local electrical coop. The high power rates turn into a slush fund they can use to get into other businesses like internet services, selling insurance, soft water plants, utility company software, long distance services, etc.
