How much do you pay for a haircut?

The girl that does my hair is a one-woman show and she charges what she's worth. And then I tip her.
Same with my barber. Been going to him for about a decade & turns out he was even my neighbor for awhile. 1 man show & an enjoyable person. He did "frowned upon" cuts for regulars the other year so I doubled what I was tipping & have just maintained that since. I get my hair cut every 4 to 6 weeks, a tip isn't an inconvenience.

(skimmed 1st page only)
currently -0- as it's not cut (past 3, 4 yrs).
I have a full set of clippers, etc and did it myself since hiskol as I wrked on'n off for others in jobs from own private home building, top admin in different forms of 'office wrk", restaurant chief, machine shop, Director of different state-wide non-profits and so forth. As a counselor or some of these other jobs it was important to fit a profile. Ya gotta give folks what they expect or suffer the consequences (inc not getting the job). Semi-retired/self employed I let my wrk speak for me and am groomed as is convenient to me (easiest/quickest).
I may 'go the opposite direction' (shaved all over) at some future point.
Never paid fora 'beard trim' while in there. May try that sometime'n C what they 'come up w/' or do.
I have hired others (my dad cut my hair till I reached hi skol age) and paid prevailing cost (last 'chain' 2015 - 20$ + 5$ tip; 'solo practitioner' 15$
+ 5$ tip - I live ina rural area). In the city I have seen V E R Y hi prices but that's for the 1K$ suit guys~

My barber charges $18, in a stand alone shop in a very high cost of living area. I think he is afraid to raise rates out of respect to his customers. He is a immigrant from Korea.

I tip the barber $22. All in $40. Well worth it, he is a top shelf professional barber.

Some of you are pretty big tippers. Great if you do it out of wanting to be generous and not thinking its an obligation. You do know that hair cutters get a regular wage? It's only waiters that are subject to an alternative minimum like $3 or $4 an hour.
Yeah but they’re probably paid minimum wage, $13.85. That’s starvation wages. If my haircut takes 20 minutes, and the barber gets 2 $10 tips in that timeframe, that’s $33.85 per hour, a fair wage. But most people probably don’t tip that much, or other haircuts probably take longer.

$10 every couple months makes no difference in my life. Might make the barber’s life different though.

Also never tipped below 20% at a restaurant before.

Yeah, the two I used most own the building(large house), and have a couple of apartments upstairs rented out. Even at $20 a cut, and even a slow day of 20 cuts a day, paid in cash so who knows how much income they declare, they are doing pretty good for my area. One has basically retired at around 50 and does some part time work to keep busy.
There are couple fancy barber shops in a downtown location with multiple barbers that charge more and pay the barbers less, but I don't see the need for it. Lots of unneeded overhead for a simple job to reduce my overhead...

I cut my own, 3/8ths on a Wahl trimmer. Just run it all over your head, 20 bucks for a haircut, but so many places are "by appointment only" I'm about done with "hair stylus" cause I'm used to the walk in barber shop, and those are few and far between, then you have to find someone who's style you like, it's a skill.

I stand corrected on my price of $14. Just went this morning, he bumped the price to $15 before tip.

Not many barbers left and they have to take continuing education every so often here. Used to be a 20 mile drive for him, now this spring it will be 80 miles each way due to lack of students.

So an 80+ year old man that has been cutting hair over 60 years needs a refresher course?

DR. and nurses, etc. I understand. But a barber?

I also go to a lady.
70ish plus 20 ish for tip, once every three months.
It's not easy (or cheap) to look this good!
:sneaky:

$11.99 AT Great Clips.
How do you rate that price from them? They're $15 here, except $13 for "seniors." The Great Clips "stylists" seem to rely too much on spacers to control the length, therefore can't seem to understand that I want the sides tapered.
My father (who had cut hair while in the Army, unofficially) did it free until I was about 23. Elderly small-town barber near here was $5 until he vanished (retired or died?) about 5 years ago. The nearby female barber he recommended was $10, then $12, then $14 as of last week.

All of the three different barbers I've used over the past 20 years are one man owner operators. I only tip $5 because they've only raised their charge to $18 from $13-15 in the past ten years. I only tipped $2 or $3 some years ago. These guys have done very well, with sizable classic car collections, vacation homes and rental properties.

Old style barbers are fairly scarce in my area. Some of the local chains don't seem to own a scissors.
