Deep fried pies at Burger King and Jolibee

When I was a kid, my favorite thing at McDonald’s was the deep fried cherry pie made with sour cherry filling. And at the time it was fried in a mixture of beef tallow and vegetable oils, which started off because it was cheaper than hydrogenated oils, but also added flavor to fries and their pies. And yeah they were often so hot they would burn the roof of my mouth. If they were out of the fryer fairly recently and in the warmer, the crust had this really impressive crunch to it.

Now we’re stuck with McDonald’s rather mid “baked” pies. But they used to be cheap (2 for $1 when there was a real Dollar a menu) even if it was only apple. I guess maybe Hawaii and where else?

But in the past couple of weeks I tried Jolibee for the first time and brought home their ube and peach mango pies. Very much McDonald’s style deep fried like I remember form the 80s. Kind of pricey at $3 each.

And Burger King has a limited time fried cinnamon apple pie. Very similar to McDonald’s from 30+ years ago. I had a look at the prices, and at most locations in my area it’s $2.49, but strangely enough the overall priciest location had them for $1.79. So I got two to take home, and that was more than the $3 needed for the free weekly fries with the BK app.

You guys have a Jolibee? Lucky!

Yes $3 seems not much $ anymore.

And yes, cheap flour carbs and mixed fat together are terrible for any human, but hey once is awhile? No harm, no foul I say.

Never heard of Jolibee. Google revealed there are a few quite near to me.
Interesting to note is that I Googled "Jolibee Restaurants" and one restaurant, the closest of those listed (hmmm...), a fried chicken joint with a different name.

Looks like AI knows where I live and included a location with similar fare at a similarly priced restaurant in my adjacent town.

Never heard of Jolibee. I see there are a couple in Florida - I will need to seek one out next trip. What should I order?

Never liked the McDonalds apple pies. Homemade apple pie was one of the few treats we got growing up. Must have been cheap to make at home.

The hot apple pies were the best! The baked ones are trash.

Google knows about where you live depending on your internet provider. But at home I get a variety of different locations that it guesses.

Jolibee is from the Philippines. They feature fried chicken, but have burgers and other typical fast food plus sides. Ube is pretty common in Filipino cuisine. It’s a purple sweet potato with a unique flavor.

Mainly fried chicken, and spaghetti or mashed potatoes as a side. The fried chicken and mash for fast food tastes pretty good - imo better than KFC or popeyes. The spaghetti is a filipino thing but my coworker said that was pretty decent too.

It tastes like they use cornstarch for the breading instead of flour as well.

Closest to us is a 25 minute drive so it isn't a regular for us. Philippine spaghetti sauce is too sweet for my tastes, being a no added sugar guy (except I will eat the occasional sweet treat). The rest of the menu is pretty good. Try the polobok for fun.
But yeah, too much salt and too much sugar in fast food.

I have a buddy whose BO smells like filipino spaghetti...turned me off of filipino spaghetti forever lol.

I just can't get into banana ketchup.

Jolibee spicy chicken dipped in the brown gravy is the best. I get it with the adobo rice.

Whataburger also fries their pies.
