At the next oil change, I will be using the FL-1A motorcraft filter and Mobil 1 5w-40 on my 2000 grand cherokee (4.0 L) How much extra oil will the filter hold. Just curious so I know how much to buy? with the standard size filter the sump is 6 quarts. Thanks

I use the Ford oversize on both my Jeeps' 4.0L engines...they will give you about 1/3 quart more oil which isn't all that much...but the media surface area is double as compared to the stock oil filter.
I have a (somewhat) dumb question. Please forgive the newb here, but, is running an oversized filter for 1) increased filtering for longer OCI's? or 2) better filtering period. Obviously there is the increased oil capacity, but I just want to know the benefits of the larger filter. I might try one on my explorer next OCI, and grand am if it will fit

I'm no expert on this, but I'm running an oversize filter [AC PF-52 vs. PF-47] on my car for two reasons:
-increased total oil capacity [I do slightly extended oci's]
-more available filter media [in the hopes that the filter does it's job longer]
In my application the larger filter accounts for another 8 ozs of oil [1/4 quart].

The larger filter size is for a 4.3L GM.
Odd thing I find with GM and filters.
My's son's 2.2 Cavalier calls for the same oil filters as my 3.8L GP.
The Hummer,Vette and the 4 banger Chev Colorado share the same filter also...I just want to know why the G.M. dealer wants $14 Can. for the fargin thing

A friend on another board put it this way: “Larger oil filter = more capacity. More oil capacity = longer oil cycle times. Longer oil cycle time = less time oil is exposed to hot engine components. Less oil component heat exposure = reduced oil temp. Reduced oil temp = longer oil life and less break down = better engine lubrication and cooling. Bigger filters are better.” Also filtration capacity comes into play. There is a greater filtration surface in the larger filter as was stated above.
Thanks! I noticed a x-ref to a MC filter for the PF-52, not to sound ignorant, but does that mean a MC filter will fit on my GM? I know that AC Delco makes filters for just about every make, but, MC on the otherhand..

Stretch out your filter media like a panel air filter and figure the velocity decrease that the flow from (let's take the outlet hole for ease in visualization) a 3/4" hole ...spread over that surface area. Even if the pores are less in accumulated area ..the flow will slow (mean velocity will not change). The bigger the media ..the lower the velocity (assuming the media has the same density between different size filters). The bigger media will realize less increase in velocity as it accumulates particles ..therefore, one would reason, that if conditions that make the bypass valve open are present (increased PSID) ..that they would be reduced ..or take longer to occur with a larger filter.
Lower velocity ..and lower PSID allegedly increase your capture ability ..or rather ..higher velocity and the impact of "shockwaves" decreases particle retention. One may reason that the impact and amplitude of the effect of pulses/shockwaves would be realized in a smaller media filter ..then it would in a larger media filter.
This is, naturally, just an opinion.

That claim of an extra 1/2 quart above is dubious. That would amount to 16 oz. more oil - and that's a full pint, kids. I suspect in most cases it really amounts to more like 1/4 (8 oz.) or 1/3 (10+ oz.) more. I'd also take issue with the generalization that a large filter provides more filtration area. There've been disasemblies and filtration media measurements done by formners that don't support that conclusion in some cases. The only thing we know without cutting a larger filter open and taking measurements is that it will at least hold more oil, and by extension, provide somewhat better oil cooling. There may or may not be more filtration media inside. I run a larger filter routinely for those reasons and the fact that my oil changes result in using an even 5 quarts instead of the 4.75 quarts if I use the OEM-sized filter. If I get more filtration media, GREAT! If I don't, so what?
I also used the FL-1A filter in my 2003 Jeep Rubicon (4.0L I6). The oil level did not change much at all, so I still use it with 6 quarts of Mobil 1 10w30.
