How many miles are small OEM oil filters good for?

Hi. I'd like to do longer OCI's on my 2005 Prius. Currently doing 20,000 miles and about 3 to 4 oil+filter changes per year.

Engine uses close to zero oil on 7k mile OCI's and oil always looks in good condition when drained. I'm pretty confident that there are plenty of good quality oils available that would safely go 10k and let me cut down to only two changes per year (my goal).

The only thing I'm not sure about is the filter. I'm using the OEM filters (from dealer) and they're only pretty small. Here in Australia I've not seen any aftermarket filters that are any better so I plan to stick with these OEM units. Are most filters good for 10k miles these days? I really don't want to do extended OCI's if I have to do intermediate oil filter changes as well, that would defeat the purpose for me.

Ok thanks. Looks like I'll make my next OCI 10k miles then. I'll probably be using either Castrol Edge or Valvoline Syngard. I'm sure either of those will be good for 10k given that this engine seems to be pretty easy on oil.

Regular/Standard OEM (cheapest priced possible), such oil filters in my opinion are good till 6K miles but are usually made to last well for popular 3K mile. I would not risk going any further than this...

Filter life is dictated by the OEM when they design the filter. Whatever the mile/time base is that they quote- accounts for that. The filter is loaded by fuel enrichment.

..but if you want to alter the equation, and you have room. This is a common 3/4-16 thread filter ..at least here in the states ..and I suspect in Oz.

Next time you're at the parts store, hold up a FL400S (equivalent number in whatever they carry) to whatever they give you for your Prius. It will basically be a longer filter. The gasket is slightly bigger, but when you hold it head to head, you'll see that it's very slight. Most likely your filter mount is wide enough to handle it.

The filter for the Camry 4 cyl, before current cartridge style, is exactly the same filter in every way except length. The extra 1/2 inch or so makes the filter easier to replace, and will give some extra filtering capacity. The Toyota # is 90915YZZF1 for the longer, 90915YZZF2 the shorter. There are filters from endless makers, but some may not have both sizes. The larger diameter filters like FL400s will probably fit, but are better for the other Toyota models that take the 90915YZZG1 type. The Prius positioning is pretty close to things. A lot of Prius drivers use the longer ones, myself included. I use the 90915-10004 from Japan, which has the super thick funny looking filter media, but they are harder to get unless ordering online. When my stash is used up I will go for something else, has to be made in USA, or Australia is OK too.

Thanks so much for your tips Newtonville and Gary. You've definitely pointed me right direction for finding a slightly larger filter.

I'm not quite sure about the differences but the OEM one that I got from the dealer is part number 90915-YZZE1 and I think it's the shorter size. I'm not what the difference is with the "E" versus "F" thing in the part number.

The tip about the camry filter was a good one. Here in Australia the most common brand of after market filter is RYCO, so this what's readily available to me. I searched their catalog for Camry and found the following :

Z386: http://www.rycofilters.com.au/catalogue/product/make/TOYOTA/model/CAMRY/part/Z386

Z432: http://www.rycofilters.com.au/catalogue/product/make/TOYOTA/model/CAMRY/part/Z432

The first one (small) is also the recommended after market replacement for the Prius and is actually what I currently have installed on the car. I also have a Toyota 90915-YZZE1 here on my bench which is exactly the same size and was going to be for my next change.

The second one (Z432) is the 1/2" longer version, so now I know exactly what to get here in Oz. Thanks heaps for your help guys. :)

I know some of the guys doing extended drains on their Corollas are using the longer filter from the Celica as it still fits perfectly but holds a lot more junk ("Toyota long" in Corolla jargon). I don't know the part #s off hand as my filters so far have been aftermarket.

Hi there!

I have a 2007 Prius. I use the Pure One PL20195 filter - it's two sizes bigger than the "correct" size. Fits just fine.

You can also use a PL10241 - it's a Pure One that is only one size bigger than the "correct" size.

IIRC, the bigger filters (PL20195 and PL10241) filter down to 10 microns vs. 20 microns for the PL14476 (the recommend size).

This stuff is directly applicable to your '05 - the '05 and the '07 have the exact same engine.

Also, the bigger filter makes it hold exactly 4 quarts - no messing with 3 1/3 quarts when filling.

I've been very happy with this arrangement so far. The filter is bigger, filters better, and is no more expensive.

Hmmm, I didn't know that you could use the 10241 and 20195 on this app(same as the 1ZZFE as well)? I've been using the 14477's, which are 1/2" longer than the 14476.

The Purolator 20195 is a pretty big filter ... lots of Tacoma guys use that filter on the 4.0L V6. And yes, it is a 99.9% @ 20 micron rating and also uses a coil spring bypass instead of the flat "45 adapter" style spring. Another plus IMO.
