Is it safe to ASSUME that Lucas,Valvoline, Castrol,Stalube etc buy grease from somewhere else? Or do they all make grease inhouse?

There is a huge number of companies that make automotive grease. There are probably a smaller number that makes the base constituents. I know Citgo will make grease for private labels and allow it to get re-branded in names other than Mystic and Clarion. One such brand is Motomaster for Canadian Tire.

I know Dow sells a number of preformed thickeners for other companies to mix with oil and additives to make a complete grease.

I used to work for Dow Corning and we produced a couple of different greases , and oil additives , Dow bought us a few year’s ago “Dow DuPont” in the whole merger thing . When Dow and DuPont split back up they tried to make sure they weren’t competing with each other. Not sure where the grease and oil additives ended up , there were allot of new companies created out of that mess
