Yes , thats the first thing I did.. and I must say that lawnboy was the first two stroke mower I ever used... Instead of bogging down in the heavy stuff, it would charge right thru it without missin a beat !! Awesome mower , in the right hands.. Thank you for your reply !!--Mike

Trust me, if it were mine, I'd be changing it all the time. I take great care of my own things.


Saw today in neighbor's trash a Sears push mower, couldn't be more than 10 years old. Tank full of gas. Tried to start it, wouldn't.

So I looked at it. Original spark plug (rusty), had to pound on the oil cap to open it (yeah, they checked it alot), what little oil was in it was black as coal. Gee, wonder why it wouldn't start? I can't believe this is how people take care of things.

This is why used cars scare me.

I think you have the wrong impression. It was taken care of for 20 years and would not be running after 30 plus if it didnt have some care taken of it. What is the point of changing oil in it when everytime you run a tank of gas out of it it burns half the oil in the crankcase? We are talking about a 125 dollar engine here not a piece of gold.

When you see oil burner and don't change oil in the same sentence you haft to assume that there is no need to change it.


He treats it just fine since he tops it off before each run.

gees, now I feel like I am over doing it when I pay $9 for a quart of redline every 6 months, and a new air filter and sparkplug once a year for my B&S/Craftsman mower

Mr. Browning3oo, Ill bet two strokes really get you fired. I ussualy run the Lawnboy, a little rich, keeps the bugs at bay. Really, if it runs and he ads oil, A rebuild would cost more than he engine is worth, add oil and run it till it quits.

My neighbor asked me last weekend if i knew anything about lawnmower engines...,.Unknown to him i owned a landscaping company for 8 years and love to tinker with any engine. Said his mower wasn't running well and kept on stalling out. I told him to replace the air filter and all would be well, I had seen/heard the mower the previous week when his son was in action. He continued to tell me how he topped off the oil and even checked the spark plug. I asked him what the plug looked like and he didn't know how to respond, i told him to again replace the air filter. He then said I've only had it for 5 years, why check the air filter. I almost doubled over in laughter, and since we are pretty good friends I told him I'd do it. I wish i had a picture, I don't think a leaf blower could get air throught that thing. Looked like it had been dragging down a street that just got fresh asphalt. He then said can't I just tap it out cuz thats what i do with my car air filters. This guy has over $70K in 2 cars in his driveway and he refused to go spend 5 bucks on a lawnmower air filter! Finally I said if you put that back in your mower I will never help with any type of engine problem again. (he was about to take the mower to a dealer and drop 75 bucks on a new air filter) He finally said ok and ran up to lowes and spent 5 dollars. Buy a used car if you wish, I'll buy mine new and run it for 20 years thank you.

When I was a kid, my dad bought a new mower with a Briggs 5 horse. I used that thing for 15 years with HEAVY use in the summer (Florida) We NEVER changed the oil and it ran like a champ. We just topped it off with whatever fluid we had laying around in the garage (5w30, 10w30, 20w50, TRANSMISSION fluid on occasion)

I imagine after 15 years of use without changing that the oil was a fine paste of metal shavings and sand particles.
