My sister-in-law had her last oil change done at Sears and I told her to have them use Castrol High Mileage. She is currently at 4,000 miles headed for a 5,000 miles OCI. I don't know what filter Sears uses, but I'm wondering if it would be ok to just do a drain and fill with MaxLife and go another round. Next time I plan to use a high capacity and change it about every 8,000 miles. The filter is just a pain to reach so I'm exploring possible lazy techniques.

I'd first ask how long the filter is in service while accumulating 5k miles. If it's around 6 months ...I'd say fine. If it's 9 months ..no. One year is about the limit in my book for a filter if the mileage is in the 10k range or higher.

The filter has been on for just a couple of months of mixed driving. The oil has some color, but isn't nasty at this point. The car has 206k and seems to not burn or leak any oil. Not bad for a domestic.

I'd change the filter, especially when changing to a different oil. I think most filters are good for 7500 miles or 6 months, whichever comes first. Follow the owners manual recommendations for filter changes unless using a high mileage filter, then follow their recommendations.

With 4k on it in a couple of months, I just can't see any filter being anywhere near loaded. The heating/cooling cycles have to be at a minimum ..lowering the fatigue factor on the ADBV/etc.

..but I would probably change it too and move my lazy to the next time.

Either way, you're probably not going to change anything in terms of long life in this engine. It's already way over the hump in terms of any life altering event. So, be lazy without fear. Someone managed all the sensible hard work in the years/miles long gone

Anti Drain Back Valve

Screw a good filter on and leave it for year. 6 months with a bottom tier "good enough" filter. Unless your miles are rediculous, area is a silt farm or you have a race taxi that'll work.
