When I was in college in 1994 I discovered usenet newsgroups and rec.autos.tech.

I didn't have a car to call my own until 1996.

It didn't stop me from learning and contributing... well, mostly regurgitating stuff I've read.

I even found a "motor oil chart" ( link ) that listed then-current oils, their flash points and ash contents. I was able to conclude that exxon superflo was a "cheap economy" oil from that arcane chart.

Then there was the minimopar filter study where I learned about fram construction, in around 1997 or 1998 I guess. I had to find a "bootleg copy" as the original poster had been "silenced by legal threats".

So how long have you been mixing the internet, oil, and vehicles?

Internet ruined my life.

I could of been a:

Piano Professional
Guitar Professional
Electronic Music composer
Master Mechanic
Black belt in Taekwondo

If it weren't for the internet.

I think one of the first websites that I ever visited when I got on the Internet were car manufacturer ones. That was probably around 1995-1996.

But as far as taking part in car forums and newsgroups, it wasn't until about 1999.

Been using modems and BBSs for about 22 years, since we had an external 120 baud modem on my family's Apple IIC and Compuserve dialup, text-only service. I still have the modem (historic/sentimental purposes only) but
the computer is long-deceased.

Family changed to PCs in the late 80s and an oh-so-fast 9600 baud modem that came standard in a Gateway PC. I ran a few BBSs with WWIV software off of that machine, and still have it somewhere.

Got on the "internet" in 1991 with Netcom dialup I believe and Netscape Navigator, on a Dell PC. I remember because it was my freshman year in high school.

Used to live on Usenet, in fact that's how I found this site.

I first got on the internet in January 1996, I started hanging out in rec.autos.mustang and rec.autos.camaro.firebird, since at that time I had a brand new Trans Am along with a supercharged 87 Mustang GT. I quickly got involved more in the Camaro and Firebird stuff though, joining a local internet Camaro/Firebird club as well as the f-body mailing list. So it wasn't long before I started ignoring the Mustang and in 1998 I ended up selling it, and trading in the Trans Am in order to buy a brand new Firebird Formula.

From that point on I became heavily involved in the LS1 websites on the net, being a moderator on the original LS1.com (before it turned into the garbage site it is now) as well as being a moderator on LS1tech.com when it came out. When LS2.com was started by disgruntled moderators from LS1.com, I migrated over there as moderator also.

Now that I've got a C5 Corvette, I spend a lot of time on Corvetteforum and C5forum too.

So I've spent thousands and thousands of hours on the internet on automotive message boards! I've got probably 200,000 plus posts on them over the years. Yikes! It's amazing I have any time to drive.
