How long does a filter last on the shelf?

I have a Baldwin transmission filter in my stash that I suddenly have a need for. It's for a 2002 Chevy 4L80E. It's older than I thought it was, a little card inside had a date of 2000 on it. Now other than age, it's not rusty and in good shape, filter media seems fine. Is there an expiration date on these things? I have no recollection where I got it from.
I'll probably just buy a new one. It's not that expensive anyway. But I am curious what others thoughts are.

Depends on storage conditions and materials.

Some in a cool dry environment will last almost forever, others rust and have glue and media deteriorating from ozone exposure, hard to know

Do yourself a favor, spend the $20 for GM Genuine/AC Delco, they come with the farpak gasket it is much better compared to that rubber crap.
I have a new reusable gasket already, this Baldwin was filter only. Just surprised it was as old as it was. I'll probably just get whatever is on the shelf at AutoZone or Napa, depends which town I go to. I did email Baldwin and they said their shelf life is 5 years.
It was more a question out of curiosity.

I think most of mfg are going to have a CYA answer and the real answer is unknowable - just a matter of how much you want to gamble. Like expiration dates on milk.

Meh, I'd use it. As for GM genuine, as an example, I pulled a factory filtran filter out of my Trailblazer. I bought a Baldwin or Hastings replacement and it was....... a filtran.

I'd use it.
There isn't much in 'em to go bad. I don't think they're glued at all.
The screens I've seen are rolled into the seam.
Of more concern is the condition of any seals (sometimes resembling short pieces of tubing) or O-rings. The rubber material might age out.
You say there's no rust. There's no dirt/spider or webs either, yes?
