I've seen what dogs eat. I'd say "forever" as a result.
We have some Tupperware thing that we use, it has a seal on the lid so it couldn't have been cheap; but we don't store long term anyhow. No problems with just folding the paper bag up and storing in the basement (cannot fit 40lb into the tupperware bin; I think a 40lb bag lasts 3-4 months).
I wouldn't push it too much, I bought a dusty bag of purina dog chow from the farm supply and it had some sort of moths living in it. Sealed bag too.
It was stored in uncontrolled climate warehouse so that probably didn't help.
Given that dry dog food still has quite a bit of fat, from non specific vegetable/animal sources (including food factory grease traps), the thing that would worry me most is rancid fats.
I was asking for long term storage like a year or more to have around in case something big happens and we can't buy food for a while. Like a stuff hits the fan situation.

Don't worry, the zombies usually don't go after pets.

I'd consider storing the same way I would store grain - mylar bags in 5 gallon buckets with O2 absorbers.

This. Check out the Survivalist Boards as well. Lots of good info on storing food in SHTF situations.
I prefer to keep my cat food in air tight containers. Vacuum packed would be better, but I don't keep it around that long that it matters. I figure if I can keep stuff in air tight containers, that insects are less likely to get into it.
