I'm a fan of the amsoil mtf myself.

Dex3 is specced. I've heard good things about mobil1's atf for the saturn mt

There is no 'Dex III' only products that claim to 'meet or exceed' the now obsolete specification which is convenient because no one can prove the claims to be right or wrong .

One of my techs put it in his Saturn and he felt that it shifted much better. As far as the ATF version I have had good results.

Of course there is and of course they they can. Good lord. Dex III, while obsolete, is a known spec that was around for a long time. Fluid mfg's know what does and does not meet it and work in it. I have used RP MaxATF in Dex III applications before with good results.

So if an automatic transmission originally spec'd for Dexron III is supposed to use Dexron VI now, what's a manual transmission originally spec'd for Dexron III supposed to use now?

I use valvoline Dex/merc in all the dex 3 applications ive had.

I just changed my corvettes t56 manual with Valvaline Dex/merc fluid and it shifts like butter. I would just use the mineral Dex 3 fluid as apposed to the synthetic RP or Amsoil. simply out of cost.

Valvoline Dex/merc and castrol transmax are two good dex 3 fluids that are about $15-$17 a gallon.

RP or amsoil will cost you $10-$15 a qt.

Do not use Dex 6 in a manual application. Gm has a part number 88861800 for manual applications previously calling for Dex 3. FYI the valvoline Dex/merc meets the specs of the GM fluid. I called valvoline to be sure before i put it in my corvette.

GM-88861800 replaces Dex 3 in a manual transmission. many aftermarket Dex 3 fluids will meet the spec. Valvoline Dex.Merc does.

^^^THIS!

It is WAY TOO THIN for manual gearboxes, especially the T56es/TR6060s.

You might consider this list of possibles:

Quote:
Manual Transmission Fluids (MTL) Fluids containing MTL Application Specific Additive Packages with GL-4 Ratings

Choosing a Manual Transmission fluid can be confusing.

Many times there is simply a specification referenced and no information about the viscosity of a fluid at 100C, where the oil viscosity is documented at the higher testing temperature.

What I recommend you do when looking for a replacement fluid is to determine the viscosity of the fluid at 100C either from the manufacturer's Product Data Sheet or from a New oil Analysis or VOA.

After knowing the viscosity at 100C (212F), one can then attempt to match up the fluid to one or more of those below:

B. The next higher viscosity MTL would be the 7.5 cSt versions (About the same viscosity as a DexronIII)

1. Royal Purple's Synchromax

2. Ravenol MTF-2

3. Honda MTF

4. VW part number G052512A2

5. GM Manual Transmission and Transfer Case Fluid

6. BMW (Pentosin) MTF-LT-1, 2

Just wanted to give a heads up. I also have a saturn 5 speed, and your post motivated me to change the ATF in my 5 speed this weekend.. I have been meaning to for a while because at idle my transmission had a lot of chatter my guess is from the fluid being sheared, even though I am sure that it was still protecting fine, whatever may have been in there may have been as old as the car I have no clue.

I did take 901Memphis recommendation on the Mobil d/m it was like 3.69 a quart at my local target, and only takes 2 and a half bottles(roughly)

The first thing I noticed, the shifting is smoother, Also my Chatter at idle has gone. So I feel like his fluid recommendation is a sound one.

I still think if you want to put something "Fancy" in there Mobil 1 synthetic atf is your best bet and the RP Max ATF looks like it would fit the bill.. OR transynd.. Which is a Allison Transmission fluid and it seems to be rather expensive and not quiet as available..

Thats just my 2 cents, most likely any dex3 fluid will be fine, I dont think these simple transmissions will be too picky.

Can't speak to Saturn's in particular, but for my (at this point, fleet of) BMW's, I've found Redline D4 ATF to be "THE" fluid for manual transmissions; not too thin in summer nor too thick in winter. On track I'll do 2 parts D4 ATF to 1 part MTL for a bit higher viscosity fluid but for street use the D4 ATF is phenomenal.

Holy [censored] dude, the list keeps growing

When did you get the '03?

Lol, there are no Bimmerholics Anonymous meetings locally so I suffer silently, actually, very loudly lol.

Grabbed it a bit over a year ago.

Since it has the same viscosity as DexIII and is specifically designed for synchromesh transmissions needing a GL-4, it should work well.

Sometimes, one has to experiment with various fluids +, _ 2 cSt from the specified fluid to see what works.
