How is my smart phone able to talk to my F350 20 miles away, without the F350 having a paid cell service?

My 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee had that feature for free for the first year. (I forget what they called it). After that I had the option to renew. I didn't do it, because I don't need to be able to remote start my vehicle in Arizona, from the Eiffel Tower in Paris.

Don't get me wrong, all that stuff is really cool, and fun to play with. But I didn't really have a need for it, so why pay for it? Besides, once I deliberately parked at the far end of my local Walmart parking lot. I then tried to remote start it from the back end of the store with the FOB, just for giggles.

When I got to it, it was running with the doors locked, and the parking lights on. So that was from the inside of a building, a good 400 feet away. I'll never need to remote start it further away than that.
Uconnect Access, I would only activate mine for 3-4 months because Chicago winters suck. Otherwise yeah… definitely not worth it.

Nothing to worry about, it's just Big Brutha keeping an eye on you so they know who you call, where you go, and what you've been up to.

I currently have only one key (fob) for the truck. I took the smartphone as a option to open the truck in case I locked the key in the truck.
Are you unable to use the door keypad?
Also, the door shouldn't lock if the fob is inside.

A

I had a Fusion with that. I absolutely love that I can program my F150 to start at a precise time to either warm it up (rarely) or cool it down (very nice when I work days and have a set time I leave - just use the app to start it 10 mins before I walk out of the front door)

tad bit off topic, but relative -

ForScan will open up a lot of things on newer Ford trucks that are typically only found in higher trims (or not even on F150's period), and allow you to customize some things that are standard to your liking. As one example - My 2018 didn't come with global open windows. Now, through ForScan, I can be walking out to my truck on a hot day and roll the front windows down with my fob. I turned off the seat belt reminder, I turned off auto stop start, I turned off the 'doodeedoo' sound when you first start it, and a host of other things.
I looked for a window down feature but couldn’t find it in forscan… 2018 f150xl. It works with your fob, that’s correct?

It may not work on an XL. Does the XL have 1 touch up/down on the fronts? That is a requirement. It does work with my fob, 3 second press on unlock rolls them down, 3 second press on lock rolls them up. Feel free to PM me for a link that will tell you pretty much everything forscan for your '18

Aha. Yes it does have 1-touch up/down on the front windows. I’ll take a look at bcm settings next time I’m in there! Thank you!

My brother traded in his raptor and he continued to get alerts and be able to see where it was. It has to have a web connection or it wouldn’t be possible. Maybe the question is I’m not paying for service why does it work?

It kinda bothers me say if I bought a used car, maybe my service works, and so does the previous owner’s (start, unlock), that’s just sloppy. But think about this one. How many XM receivers in the world get service, without payment nor subscription? I can assure everyone XM cannot answer this question. Very insecure if things are 2 way. Which is why in the real it’s normally outbound only. My .02

With all of this technology that's available today, I'm surprised that cops don't have electronic devices from the automakers to shut down a cars ignition system that they're in high speed pursuit of.

As I mentioned, my Jeep is a 2015 model. (Almost a decade old). And if I so desired, I could subscribe to Chrysler Jeep's U-Connect feature that would allow me to start it with my cell phone from anywhere in the world.

If that technology existed a decade ago, then there is no reason they couldn't have a feature available today that would allow law enforcement to shut it off. There is all but zero doubt the automakers could provide it.

Granted it would be highly controversial. And I'm not saying I would be in favor of this, "invasion of privacy". I just accept the fact that has disappeared years ago. And the more that technology advances, the more personal privacy we are going to lose. It's all but guaranteed.

In Singapore for example, they have cameras in public bathrooms to monitor if you flush after you're finished. If you don't you can be eligible to pay a fine as much as $750.00... And go to jail if you don't pay it.... Yeah I know, we're not Singapore...... Yet.

already a thing, they just had some push back so it never took off. they're still trying though, the latest is having alcohol detection in your vehicle and it being mandatory. the endgame is no one has their own personal transportation.
