How hard to turn should a new water pump be?

This is a new MB (from MB, not just a vendor) water pump. I can’t turn it by hand at all. I cut myself when I tried to force it. It sounds like something is rubbing…

For reference, here’s the one that’s on there now.

Look how easily it turns.

Is this normal? Should a new water pump give that much resistance? It looks ok otherwise. Maybe a tiny bit close between the impeller and housing??

Thanks!

I have notice the quality of most everything seems to have dropped dramatically.

Should turn pretty easy. I just did the kids 97 Vortec 350 and it was quiet and turned nice and smooth.
I am not always super picky about water pumps because all of mine are really simple to replace. I do, however
always buy new, not rebuilt.
I would not run that if you cannot turn it by hand.

It should turn easily. Does the impeller look square to the machined surface? I'm thinking it possibly could have been dropped or mishandled. Most certainly not right. I would return it before going through all the labor of installing it. If you cut your hand trying to move it, the Serpentine belt is going to squeal like crazy trying to move it.

Return that. Have the parts guy pull another one and compare them. Never had one I could not turn by hand. They pressed it on too far, or it's been dropped on that end. It's against the housing.

Yeah. I wasn’t sure how close or far that should be.

It was double boxed and no signs of mishandling.

I wonder if it can just be pressed the other way slightly to give a bit more space. I assume the pump just has a shaft with a friction fit through the bearings.

Maybe the box fell down at some point and this pushed the impeller towards the aluminium casing. Just guessing.
It should turn easy, but you should not do it, as the seals need coolant to be lubricatetd. Bu a little twist to check it should be O.K.
Yes, HEPU produces great quality water Pumps.

JHZR2 is right. It's been dorked.

I think the ones I have gotten from dealers for 4 and 5 cylinder diesels have been Graf or Geba in the box.
