how does the quality and type of gas effect oci

I don't know the answer but I think this is too good a question to roll off the page. I suspect the alcohol content has some effect on the oil additives and engine wear (either negative or positive).

I've heard that it will degrade any rubber fuel hoses that it passes through and can cause o-rings in injectors to start leaking.

I use ethonal gas in my car (no mpg drop!),10% by volume,and am curious if this is better for my engine oil in terms of increased oci due to its lower sulphur content.

I think all grades contain 10% ethanol, so it's not like we have a choice...

Only at Sunoco and Pioneer up here though, if you go to any other stations they don't contain ethanol yet.

I think it's methanol that's the really corrosive stuff, and is not commonly added to gas any more. Ethanol is supposed to be pretty benign. You'd hope so, given it's wide-spread use. . .

True, methanol is super corrosive, but ethanol also is hygroscopic and attracts water. The net effect is there is more corrosion in fuel system. Ethanol is a no-no in boats (same fuel sits in system for prolonged time).
Doubt if there is any effect on engine oil.

In many of the more populated areas of the country, the EPA has mandated oxygenated gasoline & ethanol is in widespread use.

I think several of the Minnesota members of this board have used ethanol E10 for 8 yrs and it has been a requirement in the Chicago/Milwaukee region for approx. 5 yrs.

Ethanol use has been on the horizon for quite awhile, so the majority of fuel system components, over the last 10-15 yrs, for automotive, marine & small engines are formulated to withstand ethanol gasoline blends.

The recreational boaters commonly run ethanol blended gas here in WI. The fact that it readily absorbs small amounts of moisture/water is a benefit to most fuel systems. Any corrosion problems are related to water contamination in the gas and not caused by the ethanol.
