How do you sleep?

Ideally, I like it warm (75F or higher) but don't set the heat anywhere near that in the winter. I also like a fan although I sleep with earplugs in (a habit from my old UPS morning shift days). Not too picky on mattress but a little firm is good. Super dark for me!

If I don't have a cat pesting me it just doesn't feel right.

I like the room to be cold, a sheet and heavy blanket…summer or winter. Like the blanket tucked under my feet. Have to have noise as well, a fan works fine. Any bed will do so long as its not super hard or soft. A head pillow and a body pillow (or body) to hug on and I'm out.

Actually I like to sleep during the day, sometimes in a coffin and sometimes hanging upside down. Ah it's probably too late to fool anyone now.

I was sleeping great until 3 AM this morning when my neighbor called to tell me that someone had been trying to break into his truck. I'm a little grumpy today ;-/

Question for all you guys who like to have noise... do you ever go camping? If so, do you enjoy the utter silence of drifting off outdoors, say, in a desert without insects and birds chirping? Or a forest WITH birds and other critters stirring quietly?

Even when awake, I love to find a spot where its STONE dead quiet and just soak it in. Its hard to do anymore, because eventually an airplane will fly overhead or some other man-made noise will cause a disruption except in the remotest places.

No. When I go camping and it's quiet, it is nearly impossible for me to sleep. I like a consistent, white noise, like a fan or an A/C fan and compressor. A loud humming A/C compressor is like drugs for me. Camping is horrible when it comes time to sleep.

Dead silence is great when I'm just trying to relax, but at night trying to fall asleep.. It's the worst thing for me.

Since I've started working out, I sleep like a rock. Often I'll sleep through the night now, where two years ago, I'd wake several times a night.

Occasionally, the bladder gets me up at about 2-3AM, so if I'd lay off that last glass of water, I'd probably be good.

But getting in better shape has helped me with sleep.

I use two firm down pillows and often sleep on top the blankets. The thermostat is set to allow the house to go down to 62 at night, but it seldom gets there. If it does, I'll get up and retreat to under the blankets.

I tend to sleep on my back as that is best for the CPAP machine. That too has helped my sleep, but not as much as the workouts that I began a year or two after starting CPAP.

I like to put the sleep timer on the TV and watch it while I drift off. It helps turn my mind off. The only time I don't turn the TV on is if I'm exhausted and I know I'll fall asleep almost immediately anyway. Since I almost always use the TV, I sleep on my back. I sometimes sleep on my stomach, like if I wake up during the night, I might roll over and go back to sleep. I can't stand sleeping on my side, except if I'm spooning my fiancee.

I agree I like it quiet to relax. Some of us never truely hear total silence though with tinnitus and ringing in the ears. But this reminds me since summer is coming up. If you go out in your back yard here even during the day in Summer there's a constant symphony of crickets and bugs chirping creating almost a white noise background. It's actually quite loud if you focus on it but usually you tune it out and don't notice.

Even with a pretty good case of tinnitus I still sleep whenever and wherever I want. My Wife gets mad as I lay down and immediately fall asleep.

Comes from a clear conscience...

Oh, I've got raging tinnitus also. Both ears, left worse than right. It got markedly worse about 2 years ago, but after adapting to it once it stabilized its just part of the background again. I'm mostly only aware of it when it changes in some way, or I think about it. When I read your post, I immediately became aware of it again... thanks for that. :-p

My wife gets mad when I lay down and immediately start SNORING! I think she likes it if I immediately fall asleep and stay quiet, but the instant snoring as soon as the head hits the pillow really hacks her off. It's fine if she gets to sleep before me, but I wake up with mysterious elbow shaped bruises if I fall asleep first. ;-)

And yet, my conscience remains clear also...

I lock my doors at night.

I like to hog the whole bed and my wife does not like that. I usually get elbowed or smacked in the head, sometimes shoved with her foot when I'm laying across her.

I snore a lot but that's because I'm overweight. I'm a side sleeper and a back sleeper. Never on the tummy.

I used to love it. A couple of years ago, I built a new shop over at my parents property way on the back of the property. Sometimes, especially when the weather turned cool, I would head over on Sunday night and sleep in my new shed. I loved it! It was quiet and dark and I would sleep like a baby. Then back in January 2012, I got tinnitus - I'm just getting to the point of being able to sleep when my ears are ringing loudly. I really miss the quiet but I am getting used to the ringing slowly but surely.

I noticed that last summer - sometimes, when my ringing got really bad, I would sit outside and listen to the crickets and that would "swallow up" the ringing. I remember one night it was really bad, I went outside on the front porch and this cricket got behind me and started singing very loud totally washing out my ringing. I honestly believe God sent that little cricket to get me some relief.

Every time I read this thread, I start hearing my tinnitus. :p

It really is kinda funny how it can be an 'awareness' thing- the ringing is always there, but I can ignore it until I THINK about it. Sounds like I've been living with it longer than some of y'all... I know it sucks, but you WILL eventually be able to forget its there most of the time. And I know the rest of you think we're crazy for hearing things in our head ;-p

I sleep great. Even though I can go to sleep and wake up whenever I want I still keep somewhat of a schedule. I go to bed at around 9:30. I wake up around 1:30 or 2 am to read The Word for 1/2 hour and then back to sleep till about 7:30 am. I wake up very well rested.

I take 6 mg of Meletonin when I get in bed and 6 more in the middle of the night when I wake up to read. It helps greatly. It's non-prescription in the vitamin section.

I tried to work 3rd shift once; it was a miserable 5 weeks, before I quit. I need absolute silence, darkness, body pillow, and a firm mattress.

Doesn't matter how tired I am, once it gets light out, I can't sleep. I may take a nap literally 2x per year - again, light means no sleep for me.

I literally survive on around 5 hrs of sleep, since my early 30's. I wouldn't know what to do with 7 or more hours of sleep.

I am potentially the worst "sleeper" on the earth. Not to mention times of stress. I once went 2 weeks, with no more than 2hrs of sleep/night. Not something I'd like to re-live again.

In short bits between nightmares, a result of my past life I expect.
I may try a couple suggestions you all have posted.

Smoky

Generally pretty well, but a few weeks out of the year it can be nearly impossible. The best remedies I have found during those times:

Chamomile Tea - It works. Relaxes me and helps me fall asleep quickly.
Melatonin - I use a product called Tranquil Sleep by Natural Factors that knocks me out and keeps me asleep.
