The sleeping on planes thread made me think of this. How do you sleep?

For me, if it's quiet, I can't sleep. I'll lay for hours trying to fall asleep. Turn on a fan, and I'm out within minutes. I've been that way for years. I have a window fan that I use in winter and just run it in reverse blowing out. During the summer I have a window AC on. Anytime I sleep at another house there has to be fan or I'll lay awake for hours. I can sleep decently in cars for this reason.

Back sleeper? Side? Stomach. I can only sleep on my side. I'll switch back and forth a few times before I fall asleep but I can't fall asleep on my back and especially not on my stomach.

Last thing would be pillows. Do you use pillows? I have one under my head, and a body pillow which keeps my knees apart, and also hug. This situation, I'm out within 5 minutes of laying down.

Anyone else have weird things they need to sleep well?

I sleep the exact same way even down to the window fan. But i put the window fan on the floor up on the wall and it only makes noise. I dont use the leg pillow but im the exact same. the wife is the same. When i was young i could sleep upside down but now i have to be smart about it.

If I'm pretty tired it doesn't matter much except for a few things. I can't sleep on airplanes either because I can't sleeep sitting up.

I prefer the opposite of you- DEAD quiet and totally dark is best for me. But if there is noise, its actually OK as long as it doesn't change. A hotel AC that kicks on and off loudly drives me nuts. Other peoples' music or voices... drives me nuts.

Funny thing- my wife and I recently decided to splurge and "upgrade" to a TempurPedic mattress because we're both prone to back soreness and we'd heard so many good things. Felt nice in the store, too. But after a few hours... HATE IT!! Hate it so much its already been exchanged for a high-end conventional mattress under Mattress Firm's 100-day warranty. The softest Tempur might have been OK, but we have the second-softest and compared to our old firm-under-pillowtop conventional it was like sleeping on a big brick of semi-hardened chewing gum. Can't wait till tomorrow when they haul it off and bring the Simmons.

I'm a side sleeper for the most part, but I also wind up on my stomach pretty often. Never the back, though.

I think I'm pretty conventional. I like it quiet, dark and not too cool or not too hot, maybe a little on the warm side. A TV on low or people talking quietly in another room doesn't bother me but loud noises or any from outside does. And I don't like to go to sleep feeling hungry. I can have trouble falling asleep if I'm hungry. And I like a really soft mattress. And when I sleep I prefer to sleep alone lol.

Me,the room has to be ice cold, lots of blankets, pitch black, and a fan going just for some soothing noise. If it's too quiet I'll stay awake.

I like white noise at low levels as I have tinnitus. Non steady noise like a cycling air conditioner = poor sleep.

I prefer many pillows under my head as when on my side too much pressure makes my shoulders and neck sore.

The Body pillow to swoop a leg over is like an orgasm for my lower back.

And when on my back, and if it is cold enough, a super soft pillow covering my head and eyes but not obstructing my nose is like a sleeping pill, and gives me the wicked bed head in the morning that I find amusing

I like quiet to sleep. In the summer I always have to adjust to having the fan on at night because it gets too warm in the house otherwise. After a couple of nights I adjust and sleep just fine.

I sleep well, primarily on my side. I have bouts of apnea, always have. Most get it because of being fat/obese, I just have an anatomical cause, which stinks. But I can also go for days/weeks without it bothering me. I just know it occurs - telltale sign is the snoring with pause of breath that my wife notices sometimes.

I like a medium mattress. Tried soft, thinking it would be more cradling and it hurt my lower back for some reason. Too hard and my shoulders hurt due to sleeping on my side.

Our bedroom as well as both kid's rooms have a fan running at night.

My wife and I have never slept in a made bed,we can't. I use one thin blanket, she has three comfortors and a fleece blanket.

Both of us HATE to have our feet trapped under a sheet.

I have the furnace duct shut in our room, the door is shut, and a window is cracked 24/7/365.

I've been working nights for 7 years. Normal sleep is out the window. On my Monday I stay up for 24 hours. During my work week (4 ten hour shifts) I go to bed at ten and get up at 330-400 pm. On my Friday I do the same then go to bed normal time about 10-11 pm. My nights off normal bed time. Then repeat on my Monday.

What helps me is having things dark. We have solar screen, blinds and darkening curtains in our bedroom.

HA! Me too. Even in the dead of the winter the fan is going full bore( I still have it blowing on me though ). I can NOT sleep if it is dead quiet. I need a fan or a radio on softly to get to sleep.

I am a tosser and turner. Sleep mostly on my side but never in one place for long.

One of my sleeping quirks is in addition to the noise I need a pillow over my face. Just covering my eyes and across the bridge of my nose. I have a hard time getting to sleep without it.

Yeah. Same way but with body pillow. I like to hug it, I'm a cuddler I guess. after I fall asleep I don't know how I sleep, but falling asleep I have to be on my side. During summer I like it to be cold. A/C blasting on max, with blankets. During winter it's harder to get it cold without ending up at 30 degrees so I just bear with it.

I sleep very well if my wife or honestly a girlfriend in the past(don't tell wife) is in the bed. I get very cold without someone throwing heat off.

Sleep on my side & sleep very hard for the 1st 1/2, then very light sleeping as the night goes by.

Can't wait to get up, even on weekends. Osteoarthritis hurts and I need to get up to loosen up.

But, the advantage is the earlier I get up, the sooner I can have coffee.

I prefer the room cool, and both my wife and I wear earplugs. We're both very particular about our quality of sleep-it's one of the most important things you can do to keep yourself healthy. We're almost always asleep by 10:00 PM.

I wear a mouthpiece to prevent any snoring if I happen to sleep on my back (if you're snoring you're not sleeping). I use a buckwheat pillow and sleep either on my side or back. I generally awaken 7 hours later in the same position in which I fell asleep. I vary the firmness of our Sleep Number bed, sometimes I like it soft, and other times I prefer firm.

It's exceedingly rare that I ever awaken during the night-I sleep deeply until shortly before 5:00 AM.

I'm normally awake and up no later than 5:00 AM. The absolute latest I sleep is 5:30 or so, and that's if we've been out late dancing the night before. I awake refreshed and ready for my morning exercise, and I never, ever nap during the day.

Nice. Now that my schedule is normal and they don't have me working excessive overtime, my schedule is 11-8. I'm usually up at 10, and go to bed at 1:30-2am which gives me a solid 8 hours of sleep. And same as you, I rarely wake up. I got a new Sealy posturepedic pillow top last march and that made a world of difference over the 15 year old mattress I had before.
