What version 10 or 11 red velvet cake ?
I think you need to install a app to do this, like nova launcher, I haven't done it myself.
Did you jailbreak the device?

Yes I know little to nothing about this stuff being old as dirt :)

The "launcher" which displays the app icons on the home screen and starts them when you tap the icon-- is itself an app. The launcher which ships with the OS has no provision to rename icons or otherwise display them other than how the app developers coded them in the apps.

Have you tried to do it in the app listing rather than on the homescreen?

I am seriously handicapped; I had two young Google experts where I had worked that I would consult,
now I am retired at home :(

On an Android phone. I see no rename button.
Android already offers insane levels of customization, IMHO...but maybe this one was never considered or intentionally not provided/made difficult to accomplish. So my question is...which app needs a name change and why? Maybe there is something else that can be done to satisfy your need.

In their infinite wisdom the car auctions have decided the i.d. cards to gain admission known as AuctionAccess, will not be accepted any more and instead your i.d. will have to be on your phone from now on. I want that Autotec name changed to AuctionAccess.

I'm not a programmer but I would imagine the name is not changeable, just like the logo. Maybe with a third party launcher as someone said earlier.

Can you long press on it, and then choose edit? I am on Android 11 and that works for me.
