How do you guys manage tool batteries and charging?

Im curious to know if you guys or gals rotate between fast and or slow charging?

How do you choose to store batteries, full, empty or somewhere in between?

Do you have your chargers on the wall, or do you set them on a counter or workspace?

How many batteries or chargers have you lost over time?

To answer these questions myself
I use a slow charger 90% of the time only using faster versions when necessary which isn't often as I have close to 25 batteries.
The difference on my end is the slow charge is about .5C and the fast about 1C.
I didn't always do this, but as I collected a variety of chargers, and these went from cute little appendages to fairly healthy expenses I started caring more about how I treated them over the years. It may not buy me much, but Im sure it buys me something.

I also pull them off the charger at 80% if I catch it. This seems better for long term storage, as I might take weeks to get to it after charging, and shallower cycling all round as I try to pull them off the tool just as they get to one bar. When I need the performance I just bust out the fast ones and let the thing rip, but see no need to use that higher rate daily.

I wish I had wall space to put mine on, as they take up room on my counter and the unused ones clog up my storage space.
Part of my space strategy is that I only need one "slow" unit on the counter, and can minimize footprint. (thats a 40Volt charger with an 18 volt adaptor)

I (knock on wood) havent lost any Li/ons yet and have some closing in on a decade.
Never lost a charger, I did lose two nickel metal stick types over 20 years on my old setup.

Fast Charging during the day when I'm exporting big solar, slower when its lower solar. Fast when zero solar

All 100% full. A non full battery is useless to me, and they are tools after all

Yes, see picture! But I have a few scattered around too

No chargers, but I "lost" a Milwalkee HD 9.0 when it died. I harvested the 18650's and found just 2 bad out of the entire pack

Bonus question you didn't ask - Are you concerned about fire?

Yes. I plan to paint my wall and plywood with Original Formula Intumescent Fire Resistant Coating

Currently (pun intended 😁), all of my battery powered hand tools (9) are Makita 18Vs LXTs or XGTs. I have 11 genuine Makita batteries in my arsenal, ranging from 2aH to 5aH. They get rotated often and never go below one bar on the battery's side gauge. Having this many, I run them until they get down to the one bar and swapped out with a fresh one until either I finish, or that battery needs a charge and pop in a fresh one again.

I usually wait a day before recharging on my benchtop charger, which is a Makita DC18RC optimized rapid charger. They get "stored" with a full charge, ready to go. Had to use almost all at a time during Helene to run my lights (2 handheld and 1 bar light) They all sit in my battery "box", which is partitioned with cubbies for each battery (old planter box) and the unit sits on one of my garage shelves. Never lost a battery or charger.

I have 3 ryobi chargers of various capabilities in our attached garage. Regular charge and rapid. The only thing I do that makes me sleep better at night is having them plugged into surge strip that is plugged into timer. Timer runs from 0800 to 1800. I figure at least I'm awake while charging and if anything lets the smoke out, more than likely I'll be awake to catch it. Maybe 50-50 odds but better than Vegas.

I do 80% but hitting it perfectly is a big hassle. I will do 100% if i am using it that day.
They need to make chargers that have an 80% charge option.

I wish I had wall space. Im working on that.

The 6 bay charger is interesting with its mix of charging speeds and clever daisy chain circuitry.

I've never heard of anyone bothering to align charge speed during high production hours, but I totally get it.
Lots of peeps schedule loads to avoid import - I do with my Jacuzzi.

Did the 9ah die gracefully with descending bars at full charge - or just stop? Multiple dead cells would seem it just stopped?

It would only charge to 3 bars, and it was clearly down on power. The bad cells were not really completely bad, but measured terribly in my meter

The 9.0's were a swing and a miss by Milwaukee, plenty of issues

How does your charger indicate it's at 80%? Which brand are you using?

Agree - I'd pay more for the ability to pick my finished State of charge.

yeah....sounds like a combo of balancing and maybe weak cells.

DJI Drone batteries actually have a function where they self discharge after X days to 80%. Seems they could do that too

I actually hate it, because something crazy will happen and I'll whip out the drone and its at 80% (n)

Interesting I wonder what the mechanism is that does that?

I have a DJI drone and haven't noticed that.

I have so many batteries I intentionally charge to about 80% most of the time to reduce chemical aging.

I understand for many peeps it 100% or nothing, but I can always get some work done from 80% and quickly bring as many as I need to 100% on the fast chargers if I need to rock and roll, or in the case of mowing using the big batteries take them from 80 -100% in the cool garage a few hours before I start.

Some more thoughts on this feast of pictures. You certainly don't crowd your chargers

I used to organize my rechargeables like I see here. Then a few years ago a pre molded wonder arrived from a friend it was almost a gag, but became a real asset to the house - a thing called a battery daddy case. It's probably the best bang for buck thing I've been given in 5 years.

Being able to centralize and organize all my rechargeable and throw aways in basically one really nice space efficient case was transformational.
It also has small volt meter, and a basic 2 screwdriver set with a magnetic tips and rotating handle piece. It actually works perfectly one the tiny screws in my whole house fan controller which chews through a set every 3-4 weeks when in daily use.

I have a mix of printed and purchased holders myself. The boys at the shop run whatever drawings I send them.

Here is their page on it

https://support.dji.com/help/content?customId=en-us03400006548&spaceId=34&re=GB&lang=en

It says "Note: It is normal to feel moderate heat being emitted from the battery during the process" so that opens it up a little

Here's where Im at I noticed it bled down more than I would have thought,
- but kept the batts in the battery case, and put the whole setup into the carrying case - and threw that in a metal drawer for 5 months.

DJI Air 3S

Supports controlled self-discharge, but does not support manually setting the starting time of this function.

Auto-Discharging Function Rules

DJI Air 3S Battery Capacity: 4276mAh

After the battery is fully charged, if not used for 3 days, it will self-discharge to 96%; if not used for 15 days, it will self-discharge to 80%; if not used for 45 days, it will self-discharge to 60%. Slight heating during the discharge period is normal.

That's all the thought I have put into it. I don't have enough batteries to really rotate them and I use them until the tool doesn't work them charge them to full.

Having a cabinet "o" chargers is cool. Probably going to get pretty warm in there if you end up running them all at once.
