How do you extract oil for mid-OCI UOA?

I'm about to do my first hopefully mid oil change interval OCI. Should I buy a pump and tubing and draw the sample oil out the dipstick tube? Or would it be OK to drain a little out the bottom? I have an Aeroquip quick connect valve, and I expect I should put a clean hose on it if I try that.

Any pump recommendations? Any inexpensive pump recommendations? Most seem expensive, but I remember seeing one without a tank that was cheap.

I just collected a sample from my Jeep. Pull the drain plug, let it flow, grab your sample, and replace the plug. I only needed to add 1/2 quart to top off.
I would think that adding any pump or tube could possibly contaminate the sample.

Definitely not the recommended practice for mid-drain sample. Anything that may be on/near the bottom of the pan may have come out. Even at drain, let ~1/2 the HOT oil drain oil before taking a sample. Sucking out of dipstick is much better. I've seen $25 pumps as well.

As for contamination, take a purge sample first (fill 1/2 to 3/4 full or so), then remove purge bottle and attach a clean new sample bottle and filler up. Use new tubing each time as well.
 
... or have a clean oil pan ready - then drain all the oil - getting your sample at the halfway-point -- then pour-in the drained used oil for a 2nd time - then top-off.
 
Thanks for all the replies. I'll either buy a pump or drain a lot of the oil into a bottle, take sample, and refill. I'm afraid I'd get it dirty in a pan. But the Aeroquip drain plug makes it easy to get the oil into a bottle.

I respectfully disagree. If I'm taking a sample, I wipe the plug area first. The oil is also HOT. Blackstone Labs doesn't specify one sampling method being better than the other. http://www.blackstone-labs.com/gas_sampling.html
Pumps have a greater chance for contamination the more you use them. Either from dirt, old oil, or from cleaners when you try to get all the pump innards clean.
 
try this site....i've been considering it, just to make OC's less likely to get messy (tho it always seems filter removal is the messiest part for me) and just less hassle all around. gotta check on their to see ifit will work for your application. hope it helps.
 
The pump never touches the oil - it creates the vacuum inside the tightened sample bottle.

Feel free to do sample your favorite way:)

I use this.

The male part replaces your drain plug. You attach a short piece of hose to the female part. When you connect them together, your oil drains. In normal operation there's a cap over the male part, so you have both the valve and the seal on the cap preventing your oil from leaking.

It costs more than the the spigot solutions like the Fumoto valve. Each have advantages and disadvantages, but I'm happy with Aeroquip.

Interesting. Is that the same pump that Pablo listed? It looks like it will fit a Blackstone sampling bottle. Heck, if I don't have to dump a 1/2 quart to take a sample then that makes more sense than the way I do it. I always pictured a pump similar to an oil squirt can that could get dirty. Thanks OilGuy.
 
I bought a squeeze ball pump at the local hardware store. $6.99. Run it down the dipstick tube..
