How do really cheap 5W-30 dino's meet ILSAC GF-4?

"Is it really that much harder to re-refine oil than to refine crude oil out of the ground? "

I'm thinking it's somewhat easier to re-refine oil; several steps are out of the way, so there is less 'refining' to do.
SOME of that drain oil is probably synthetic, so the 'base' is pretty good to start with.
Filtering would be the main problem, me thinks.

When is the exact time frame that they expect SN oils to come out anyhow? I kinda figured it wouldn't be too much longer, it seems like SM has been out for a while now.

How do we know it's 100% re-refined? What if they're adding a big of group III, and not telling us?

GF-5 is scheduled for summer of 2009, so API SN (or whatever combo of letters is picked) would generally follow in November 2009.

Just barely over two years - SM officially hit the retail chain Nov. 30, 2004. As early as September 2004, though, GF-4 was trickling onto store shelves from some blenders, and could even be indicated as SM as long as "SM" wasn't printed within the API donut. That silly sidestepping begs the question what the point was in even having an official intro date.
