How do I know if my Supertech is an Ecore?

I was in the U.S. last week and picked up a couple Super Tech oil filters at Walmart (ST3593A & ST7317). Is there way to know if these filters are Ecores without cutting them open?

I don't think the 7317 is. I'm not an ecore fan, for what that's worth, but the 7317 I cut open was a decent filter though far short on media compared to a Purolator Classic.

The STP is the same as the Supertech, and is a 7317, all three after 5000 miles:

No plastic cage in either the 7317 or 3593. Both have a metal center tube. Although, I've noticed that one 7317's center tube has a smooth metal wall with round holes and another has a spiral metal tube with squarish holes.

Op stay clear from the escraps, find a WIX,NG,PC and have a real filter!

Well, from what I've seen, neither ST looks to be of the Ecore variety, so I have no worry in using them for regular OCIs. I'm not in the US very often and have read good things about the ST's so I though I'd buy a few inexpensive filters for my leased vehicle. Filters are way over priced here in Canada and you have to pay an environmental fee on them as well.

The ST 7317 is not an ecore, decent for ~$2.80. In the pics above the STP is the 4967 which IIRC is the shorter(est) version of the 7317. Looks as though it encountered some moisture/condensation.

The new ST 7317 are going with the square holes now like the STP.

If the center is a metal tube, I'm pretty sure you're good to go. I use the 7317 and 4967's pretty regularly w/ good results.

"In the pics above the STP is the 4967 which IIRC is the shorter(est) version of the 7317. "

It's weird, it seems like the 4xxx is a replacement for the purolator 14476 and the 7317 for the 14477. But, both the 4967 and 7317 were the same length on the outside. Not sure on the inside, I haven't used the SuperTech yet. Anyway, the deal was an STP and they didn't have a 7317, just this, and it seemed identical from the outside on my table in the garage.

Anyway, I don't like the Ecores. These are decent if you don't do extended OCI and don't need the media area.

dont make me dig up the countless pics of perfectly fine ones. posting over 30 pictures would be really annoying.

E-Cores are good filters for up to 7.5k, as attested by the Delcos on OLM vehicles. I actually got a Delco 61 with close to 7k here soon that will be cut open. Shame my wal-mart stopped carrying the right size for my Sierra and Focus.

There's no use... I'm with you on this issue. I have used E-core on my old Saturn for many years when i owned the car. I cut all the them open and they all are in great shape. REcently I pulled an AD delco off my dad's truck and it was also in great shape. There's 2 E-core that I posted on this site that shows everything was working fine. Some people just get off or enjoy basing a certain brand of filter.

Yeah, the type of people that have used ecores that have failed. We can talk all day about how they have a 99% success rate but the FACT remains the design is flawed when poor QA factors into the equation:

A $2 NPS worked better than the AC Delco ecore in the same application:

I don't care what you use in your car, but I won't use any filter with a hollow, or close to hollow, center tube without having the ability to inspect the media, spacing and it's bonding before it is installed. That excludes any filter in a can that doesn't have a solid center tube.

Oh, I'm sorry was I talking about you? Read my post again. My point was some people will bash a filter such as Fram just because other people do, but they have never use a Fram in their life. Did I say "Webfors enjoys bashing E-core"??? These people will bash a certain filter up and downn but when you ask them to put up proof about their experience, they can't. You had a bad experience, and I can see why YOU don't want to use one again, but i'm talking about the people who will say bad things about them but don't have any proof.

You can blame the internet for spreading the experiences of others. These days, people read and take note of other people's experiences.

I'm sure those people who bad mouth any certain brand of oil filter, even though they've never uses said brand, are doing so based on the experiences of others - hence, a stereotype is born. If it's true or false is something the readers will have to decide ... but if I hear and see repeated info on brand X of filter having issues, then it's hard to refute the information. If I heard a bunch of negative information about a product (not matter what it is), I'm certainly not going to go out and try one for myself to see how lucky I am.

The internet and chat boards like this one will separate the best from the worst products in the market. It will either force the manufactures to improve their products or die on the vine in the market world.

BTW - I'm a metal center tube and metal end cap fan ... IMO, that is the old tired and true way to construct a reliable oil filter. I'll buy the metal constructed filters until they are no longer available, or until the day I own a car that uses cartridge filters instead of spin-ons.

Dude plain and simple we bash these escraps because they suck ! plain and simple,,now go do your self and car a favor and spend a whole $4-6 a NPS,PC or WIX and have a real filter that has zero chance of feeding media into your engine!

Proof?? Web posted proof of his failure, i can't post any because i'm smart enough not to run this [censored].

Hey! I like Fram oil and air filters!! Why? Because I've opened enough of them up to trust their design and their air filters dropped Si dramatically in my Subaru. Pulling a standard orange can with 25k miles off a friends Honda, and it being in relatively good shape (better than my 3k mile ecores), confirmed it for me.

Disclaimer: No one brand/product is the 'holy grail'. What works fine in one car might work terribly in the next. So figure out what works best for you.
