Also, what size are you trying to make the pictures for the funeral?
We had the same question a few years ago, when my dad died. We had an old portrait of him that was painted after he got out of the Army, and we wanted it reproduced onto those little 2" x 4" cards they pass out at the service. My mom and brother wanted the original portrait scanned at the very highest resolution.... It was going to be time-consuming and expensive. Instead, I placed the portrait flat on the driveway, and photographed it straight-on from above with my DSLR. I don't even think I used a tripod. The 2" x 4" cards looked fantastic, as did the 14" x 20" (or whatever) print my brother had done up at Walgreens. Every brush stroke was perfect.
