i need to get a few large family pix hanging on the wall into digital form for the funeral . small one i can do with a scanner , but the real big ones , how can i do those?

Thanks for any help

Try to bring it to Walgreens or CVS? or at least call them first to see if they have the capability by telling them the photo size.

If they don't do it, find place like AlphaGraphic or similar.
Again, call them first.

I hear some UPS Store or Fedex locations have large format scanners. Probably meant for architectural docs, but might be good enough for photo quality.

Also, what size are you trying to make the pictures for the funeral?

We had the same question a few years ago, when my dad died. We had an old portrait of him that was painted after he got out of the Army, and we wanted it reproduced onto those little 2" x 4" cards they pass out at the service. My mom and brother wanted the original portrait scanned at the very highest resolution.... It was going to be time-consuming and expensive. Instead, I placed the portrait flat on the driveway, and photographed it straight-on from above with my DSLR. I don't even think I used a tripod. The 2" x 4" cards looked fantastic, as did the 14" x 20" (or whatever) print my brother had done up at Walgreens. Every brush stroke was perfect.

if its for an image on a TV the "pic of a pic" is likely good enough with a good camera or phone.

A DSLR will do well as would a decent phone.

Get decent lighting so you don't get reflections or shadows! A bulb 45 degrees to the left and another 45 to the right is usually the best answer. If the photos are framed, leave them in the frame so they're flat and not distorted.

Honestly call a local college and see if you can get a photo major to do this for pocket money.

My guess is it will be made into a photo montage that will be played on a TV. The original is likely in portrait layout while the TV will be wide-format (landscape), so the picture will end up rather small in order to fit.
