About 13 below zero at car starting time this morning and my old GMQ started right up with Mobil 1 High Mileage 5w30 in there, though there was a strange buzzing sound from the engine compartment for awhile. For some reason the engine fan kicked on and off for a bit too. I was wondering if the buzzing could have been coming from the bypass valve in the oil filter--it seemed to come from that vicinity, but hard to tell. In any case, all gauges read normal and everything worked fine, though it took quite a bit of time to get warmed up!

My '90 Geo Prizm makes a buzzing sound too...whenever it's under 20. Today the sound lasted the longest I have ever heard it, maybe 10 seconds. It's loud. I should record it and ask if anyone knows what it might be.

It was -30C here this AM (-22F) and the Expie fired right up. Now I also had it plugged in however, just the factory block heater but it means I have movement on the temp gauge by the time I get my son up to his school, vs half-way to work.

Oil in the pan is Mobil 1 Advanced Fuel Economy 0w30. No odd noises except for the defacto PS system moan for about 3 seconds which it does when it is below -15C.

Doesn't take long at all to warm up while driving.

I didnt start my car this morning, but yesterday at 9F my diesel started like a champ, though RPMs were a bit low for the first 30 seconds or so.

My wife's 08 rabbit started perfect this am, but it was low on coolant... No leaks or indication of AF in the oil, so I have to wonder how much is volumetric loss due to the temperatures...

My poor yaris was noisy as all get out - sounded like it had no oil flow whatsoever for about 30 second: knocking and clacking. Almost put Mobil 1 Advanced Fuel Economy 0w20 in last night before the -10 snap, but was too lazy ...

My F150 fired right up at -10*F, except with a little of the typical Ford/Merc power steering buzz( for a couple of seconds).

They all do that i think my GM's sing a little too for the first few seconds.

Pretty good.
Drove my 2K SW2 this morning. Has Motomaster (Shell) 5w30 synthetic in it.
Only noise was power steering whine for a while.
Was about -7F.

-24C (-11F) had the block heater plugged in, cranked a little slow bu only two revolutions and it fired right up. Think this is the last winter for that battery. Much quieter than yesterday at -18C not plugged in! Car was saying -20C, coolant at -14C. Did warm up quicker but it still takes a while.

It touched 0F last night, Forester started slow like it always has since the battery is only 6 years old now.

The trans & center diff always groan when cold after I let the clutch out in neutral, that fluid just doesn't like being stirred in the cold.

What amazes me is you can let the Forester sit for 3 days at below freezing temps and the battery will start it every time. Apply a constant load of say 110w from the headlights for 2-3 minutes and you get a no chance pail wurring from the starter.

New battery is coming this summer, money's a little tight right now.

Haven't started the Jeep since yesterday, when it was about 5*. It complained a bit as usual. Cranked for about 4 - 5 seconds, then caught, ran rough for a minute or so (stock injector spray pattern causes trouble vaporizing the gas in cold weather). Transmission was a bit unhappy, sticking in gear due to thick fluid for the first minute or so of driving. Being so cold, it had about a 1/4 second burst of valvetrain clatter on start.

Power steering was silent as usual, although a little numb until the fluid warmed up a little. By next winter, hopefully I'll have upgraded the injectors, and she won't be so cold blooded anymore. At -8* this morning, I wouldn't have been surprised if she didn't start on the first crank, or even needed a shot of carb cleaner to get going.

I'm in OVERK1LL's neck of the woods, and it was -30C as well at my place. Had the car plugged in for an hour and a half so it started and the power steering pump complained as well for maybe 10 seconds.
Troubling was that the Neon had a box of neutrals for a few seconds. R or D didn't do anything until I revved up the engine up a bit and then the trans would grab and then release as the rpms dropped. After a minute it would hold a gear at idle and I drove to work without trouble. Fluid looks and smells normal and is at the right level so I am a bit perplexed. It has run in one -30C morning this year already without trouble too.
Probably I should just get a transmission fluid flush and change anyways, its probably 10 years old in there.

I wish I could write about -9 and -5 here. Finally getting above 0 this week. If you have to worry about your vehicle starting around 0 F then you need to have it looked at.

Bitter cold this morning at 35F. Some frozen stuff on the windshield so I had to back down the drive a bit to get out of the shade. Then I had to sit in the sun for 2 minutes until it melted off. And then, to make matters worse, it was too cold to roll the windows all the way down for the drive into work. I hate winter.

Yes, I'm funn'n y'all up there in the arctic.

-28.6C this AM, and even with the car plugged in, cranked VERY slowly 2-3 times, and then fired up. Fan/accessory belt made a high-pitched whine for a couple of minutes, and then everything was okay.

Transmission takes a couple of seconds in these temps to shift from reverse to drive in these temps - back out of spot, shift to drive, wait a few seconds, and then you can 'feel' drive engage...gatta be gently on a HM auto in the cold!

LOL, my transmission has never given me any shifting issues in the cold, and she's pretty close to yours in terms of mileage
