How come gas nozzles always leak a bunch of fuel out of the nozzle?

I swear most of these pumps dribble fuel out slowly when not in use. I'm pretty I just dumped like 3oz of diesel fuel on my shoes.
Isn’t a pump nozzle designed to send fuel where it is pointed at?

This is a safety sign we’ve had to post at certain places where safety incidents have occurred:

The problem is when I first start pumping is when it dribbles. So, when I remove the nozzle from the pump and select whatever grade of fuel I need. I always let it finish dribbling into the tank once I'm done pumping. My only guess is most people don't do this and I get a slug of gas still in the nozzle because they yank it out of the filler hole and hang it up..me being cheap I want to get every last drop I paid for.
I see. Odd.

Mine does it and it's fairly new, maybe a couple thousand gallons through it. Just a 1000 gallon tank for my equipment. I get bulk fuel for slightly above cost from work, so usually $0.75-1.00 cheaper than at the pump.

Annoying to dump diesel on the ground or on my pants or shoes. I think I'm down to 1 pair of Sunday jeans out of 7 or 8 new pairs I bought last fall for a trip.

I don't notice that happening too often when I buy gas, but it does bother me a lot that when you first start pumping gas, the first 1/4 of a gallon ends up being whatever octane the last person chose. So when I'm filling my Corvette with premium, I don't really get 100% premium, I'm getting a little bit of 87 octane at first (but yet paying for it as if it was premium!) I miss the days when gas stations had a separate nozzle just for their premium.

I shake it pretty good before pulling it out. 😁I was pretty sloppy in my teens, never shaking it much before pulling it out rather quickly and I always dribbled a little. As I got older, and wiser with longer high flow nozzles, it not longer happens. I've been pumping diesel for more than 24 years.
I'm guessing you are a young one or just bought your first diesel last week.

Same with fueling up mowers and other equipment. Dang nozzle drips all over
I just don't get it. Whether I remove or put back the nozzle, the nozzle is always aiming at an upward angle. Gravity makes it impossible for unpressurized fuel that is still in the hose to spill out. I approach the filler hole on the car with the nozzle also tilted up and I tip the nozzle only for insertion. No spills.

On the bottom side of the nozzle tip you will see a small hole. That is for the auto stop sensor click off. Fuel gets drawn up into that tube when nozzle clicks off and will stay in there between uses. One reason MC riders always shake out the nozzle before fueling so gas doesn't get spilled onto tank tops.

In NJ and I think Oregon you can’t pump your own gas. Pull-up, stay in the car and hand the station attendant your card or cash, tell him how much and after it over you get the receipt and drive away. Especially safe for the ladies, old folk and teen girls. Attendant deals with the hose dribbles and the hand stink from the nozzle grip.

Three days ago I filled up as a NJ Costco so top tier at $3.15/gal for 87 regular.
