How can I goof on a starter re-install.

The beretta had/has/will always... issues...anyway.
I pulled off the starter and the oil filter to make room to pull the ignition on it.
All went well, until it was time to test my work. The starter grinds against the flex plate, unbolted, again. Pulled the starter, threw it against the battery, works just fine. There were no shims, so there was nothing to screw up, cleaned the mating surfaces until i got dizzy from fumes.
I hate this car already, the ungeneered transverse garbage bay with crammed everything, the fwd nonsense, the leaks that never end, and this isn't helping.

I feel as stupid as did when at 16 I tore out almost all lug nuts on a wheel for over torquing. What did I do? This was as simple as replacing an air filter, just bolt on, hook up and go, but no. Help?

Do you still have the old one to compare to? Can you count the number of teeth on the drive gear of the starter and check it against the old one?

Three positives and solenoid. Size wouldn't allow for a mix up.

I had this problem from using a rebuilt starter from autozone. Grinding. I returned and bought OEM new starter. Worked perfectly.

I once went through three gold starters from Advance. I replaced my Cavalier's starter from AutoZone and the replacement was not the same part # as my OEM. It sounds like an early 90's 4 cyl when it cranks, actually annoyed me quite a bit.

Oh, I see. Yeah thats strange. Is there an inspection cover you can remove to see what is going on?

It sounds like a shim was on and fell off when you didn't see it. Check the tooth mesh with a straightened out paper clip through the inspection cover.
You should be able to fit the wire between the starter pinion and flywheel teeth, shim it until it does.
