I like that they're rated for 10k miles and seem to have silicone ADBVs, but I've seen posts with filters made in USA, China, Mexico... Some with tears. Not sure what to expect.

I have a 2007 Subaru Outback 2.5 with 135k miles, infrequently driven, maybe 5-10 times a month, around 500-1500 miles a year. Mostly short trips, occasional longer trips, mild weather. Will be using Pennzoil Platinum High Mileage Full Synthetic 5W-30. Looking to do ~4-5k / 3-5 year OCI's (silicone ADBV seems like a good idea here).

Was gonna add a few Pro-Tec PXL57712 filters to a Rock Auto order. Some alternatives considered: Wix 57712, Champ PH2876XL, Champ PH2867XL (taller 7317 equivalent, not usually listed for the vehicle). Maybe I'll grab one of each. The Champ filters don't have the 23 psi bypass spec.

I've read several of his posts, but didn't know what to conclude. Here's one from March 30, 2024:
Yes and I just bought 18 more. Although, don’t ever buy older stock PROTEC and or AUTO EXTRA . They tear like the plague.

And you are welcome sir Justin 🍺🇺🇸👍🇨🇦😍😍
How old is older stock, and how about newer stock?

Older stock as in 19 and earlier. Those tore a lot as they made in Mexico.

Newer ones can be India/China made or Purolator style I’m seeing. Wouldn’t push pst 5k oci in anything I care about.

Appreciate the reply. I've seen various C&P's from you in past couple years with their 2022 redesign, including a torn made in USA and an intact made in Mexico (another here). Obviously I don't have the full picture, so I'm still not sure what to make of it. I guess from your experience, pre-2020 made in Mexico had the highest rate of tearing, and the ones from the past few years have mostly been okay (regardless of COO)?

Yeah, I would say so. Sad that the India/China made ones hold up better than the Mexico made ones. O wouldn’t run a PRO TEC as I have a lot of Donaldson and OG wire backed ULTRA’s to use.

I purchased 3 of these from rockauto June of 2023 for our 2013 Lexus GS. Coming up on the 10k mark in the next couple months for this change. Will try to post back how the filter did

As per Wix, the Protec's now "provide up to 96.5% dirt-trapping efficiency" but don't include a micron rating or beta ratio. Assuming this 96.5% is at 20 microns (which would match Purolator classics), I don't see any reason not to use them up to 5k miles if they have a nitrile adbv or up to 10k miles if they have a silicone adbv

edit: rock auto has photos of the PXL51516 (PH3600 equivalent) with a silicone adbv, but nitrile on the PXL51372 (PH2 equivalent), so YMMV

This was run on my 2013 GS350 for 10-11k miles. I think the filter did really well. It looks untouched, all pleats intact and not wavy.

That is a good looking aftermarket cartridge for Toyota. More so at "10-11k miles". Curious if you know the coo? Thanks for pics.

As for the Protec filter line, it has been M&H/(wix) commercial/jobber line, so 'my' expectations would not be high.

What's a coo? Country of origin? China.

I'll be honest, the same way there isn't really a bad oil, I don't think there is a bad filter either. I generally run whatever is cheapest and they tend to work just fine. I doubt I've been lucky enough to get high quality filters every time I do a change.

Sure there are grades to filters and some may be better for the task or worse. But I don't think any would cause a major issue on a 10k or 1 year change.

The box for this protec says up to 10k miles, so I had no doubts it would be up to the task.

I'm sure I'll start many a debate with my opinions but I personally haven't had any issues across multiple cars following this approach.

Yes that's it, thanks. I'd just make one distinction here. Your ProTec filter is a cartridge, and a very specific no endcap design one for Toyota at that. The vast majority of filters in use are still spin on. most people commenting here would be/are referencing that type filter. As for coo, not uncommon to see the cartridge type filter with that coo, even as the spin on type same brand may be domestic.

IDK about no bad filters. I do know there are different tiers of filters, the Protec line as accurately noted is M&H Wix's lowest tier. Not my interpretation, M&H Wix's grading. Doesn't change that the cartridge pictured looks good. As for the specific oci/fci, your vehicle(s), your call.
