How adjust wheels on mower deck?

So I got this 54" desk on a Husky with the 24 hp motor.

Fine, fine, mower.

Having trouble getting the mower deck wheels adjusted properly. There are four holes and am currently in the second from the bottom. The wheels mostly turn all the time and I'm thinking that this is not good for the deck. However, any higher and the mower deck tends to make skid marks on the lawn for everything but level ground. The lawn looks GREAT.

Now, this is on deck height setting "5" of "7". As the season progresses, I will be using setting number "6"

My last mower had a 38" deck and it worked well for 14 years until the wife made me give it to the youngest son...

This wider deck has me scratching my head trying to figure it out. The nice thing is that it cuts the grass clippings much finer than the old mower.

Any suggestions?

Perhaps the solution to your issue is to remove one blade of your 54" mower, thereby providing a 27" mowing swath which is more manageable.

Well that (in itself) wouldn't do me much good, as the mower deck would still be 54" wide and want to hang up on un-even ground.

I see that you're from the Pacific Northwest. Doesn't it rain a lot up that way? Surely you folks mow a lot of grass.

Maybe you have some good suggestions?

I'm limited to a 42" deck in order to pass through the gate between my front & back yards, but I have the same problem as you are experiencing, i.e. some areas get scalped and others look like Mohawk haircuts. The issue appears to accompany the technology.

Solution: perhaps an 18" push mower.

Yep, lots of rain here, but we don't suffer floods & tornados. Just awaitin' the big 8.0+ offshore subduction earthquake & 65' tsunami that is overdue for this area.

Actually, with the mower deck adjusted as it is, the deck gives a very clean, even cut. much better than the other mower. I just figured that the deck wheels shouldn't contact the ground on level ground. I've tried adjusting it every which way and this setup provides a very, very, nice cut.

As a sidenote - the very BEST cut ever was an old Lawn Boy with that staggered wheel. Never found a push mower since that one that gave a better cut.

You may have to 'mow with the contour',if the anti-scalp wheels are in the right height.Happens to us all the time.You may just have it too low, what type of lawn/type of grass?

The lawn is recovered pasture. Mostly Fescue. I'm cutting with the contours but there are many. My problem is probably that I'm not accostomed to having this wide mower deck.

I'll mow it the next time one more notch "up" and see how it goes. The other mower had much more adjustment for the deck wheels. HA ! I guess I could drill another hole in between these two.
