I am really interseted in trying mobil 1 HM in my 1995 Dodge Ram with a 318 and 128,000 on it. I tried Amsoil when I first bought it in 1998 and had issues with consumption. Not really much worse than conventional, But at the time it seemed like a lot at about 1 qt every 1500 miles. It was about 1 qt every 2000 with Trop Artic dino which I ran until about 2 years ago when I switched to Maxlife. I do rather like Maxlife as consumption is now down to about a qt every 2500 miles, but would like to play around a little and get a full sythetic in there for winter in Minnesota. I was thinking about a 50/50 with Maxlife and Mobil 1 HM 10w30 and see how it goes. If there were no leaks or anything, I would like to use Mobil 1 at 100% on the next change. Would there be any compatibilty issues with these two oils? The truck had a very slight main seal leak (seepage) actually until Maxlife stopped it but other wise the engine is very, very clean. I did Valve covers this spring and it looked perfect in there. I plan on driving the truck as long as I can, It's my baby, Would it be worthwhile to play around a little and try to get a full syn in there?

I should add..I am currently running this in my girlfriends 96 ram and the truck seems to like it, But I am still a bit worried about the main seal on this one.

They do have Maxlife Full Synthetic...I would run this instead of mixing...

I sencond the use of Maxlife full synthetic..

I mixed the SynPower 20W50 with Maxlife. And would mix Max Synth if I had a reason. Check the MSDS for hints on composition. I look for commonality in base oil.

I think much of this stuff has some small % of Synfluid PAO base and suspect the synth versions have large % S-Oil GroupIII. Ashland distributes both Synfuild and S-Oil, they are a blender and Valvoline is trade name.

I don't think I would blend in M1.

I wouldn't bother mixing MaxLife with M1, although there's no harm in it. But I doubt you'd notice much difference. And MaxLife semi-syn has a pretty good pour point of like -33C...

It had occurred to me to mix Mobil 1 0w-20 with the HM Mobil 1 10w-40 to bring it down to a aprox 5w30 semi HM oil. Or half Mobil 1 0w30 with Mobil 1 HM 10w30.

I would probably not mix Mobil 1 with Maxlife though. Just go with Max Life 5w30 if you can find it.

Since I'm cheap and I can't find Ma Life Syn 5w30 for a low price I will probably mix the Mobil 1 myself.

What was the viscosity on the Amsoil? I'm thinking the viscosity plays a bigger role in the differences of consumption more so than the brands. I'm thinking for that Dodge 318, you should play around with some Maxlife 10W-40.

It was 10W30 in the old 7500 label. I ran it for about 9,000 miles spaning 3 changes. If I knew then what I know now I'd have continued to run Amsoil but probably stepped it up to 10W40. My consumption now with 10W30 Maxlife is very acceptable at 1qt per 2500 miles. Heck even a qt in 1500 isn't really all that bad, But for some reason it scared the ---- out of me.

As for Maxlife 10W40, I tried that on an oil change back from May to July and the truck really didn't like it to much. Power was fine but mileage suffered some (about 1.5mpg) I am currently running 10W30 and the truck seems pretty happy with it. I'm planning a UOA in the next couple of weeks (When I change, I'm at 2700 miles since my last change) to see whats going on in there, And if everything looks good I might just stay with Maxlife. It has worked wonders for my dads 93 Dakota with 210,000 miles on it. He never really maintained the Dakota too well, 7-10K OCI's running Napa Convential. His truck was smoking pretty good on startup and had pretty low oil pressure and 3 changes with Maxlife and it really seems like a different truck. No smoking and better oil pressure. I assume it was pretty slugged up in there. His oil (now that I'm doing the changes) has been changed on time and it was so dirty in the old dak, The first Maxlife change plugged the filter at about 2500 miles. The filer weighed about 4 pounds when i took it off, So I have no doubt about Maxlife's cleaning abilities. I know Maxlife blend is an excellent oil, Probably as good a some synthetics, But I'm always looking for something better.

Yes! From what I've gathered after reading so many threads on this board for so long is that full synthetic oils seem to act like a thinner version of their conventional counterparts.

If you're satisfied with the current rate of consumption, I say fantastic; but if it were me and the 10W-40 was cutting down on consumption with no appreciable loss in power, I think I'd stick with it even though I might have to take a hit in fuel mileage. The main thing however, is not to have so much consumption to where you're fouling spark plugs; and from what I can tell, you're still safe even with the 10w30.

Why mix at all, just use one oil.

I suppose if I mix Mobil 1 HM with Maxlife the resulting stuff can be considered one oil.

Redline 5w30

why suggest redline 5w30 to someone who is using maxlife 10w30 and clearly stated that he has a bit of a seal seepage issue and is worried about very low viscosity synthetics? makes no sense to me...

anyways, i would suggest giving maxlife synthetic a shot in the 10w30 or 10w40 flavor and see how the truck likes it. cant go wrong with something that is already kicking so much butt in that engine.
