I found this article very interesting and thought I'd post a link. I always wondered what the exact mechanism looked like inside a torque wrench.

And "close enough" is probably just fine for most home applications. Beam wrenches don't fall out of calibration (unless severely damaged). More important than knowing how those click wrenches work, is understanding the torque process and how much error (+/- > 25%) can be easily induced by all of the variables (thread condition, technique, etc.). Preaching to the choir, I assume.
