Stumbled across this video and thought they did a great job explaining how a typical differential works and thought it might be good for others to see here.

I love old videos like this and couldn't resist watching it.

3:28 is where they get into showing you how it works in case you don't want to sit through the story part at the beginning.
 
I'd like to meet some mathematical machining geniuses that could set up a machine to cut hypoid ring-and-pinion gears like that back in the day!!
 
Those Chevrolet films were the best even though most had insufferably long, valueless "pre-introduction" sequences.

This one about differentials is the best one. By that I mean the most informative and usefull.

I know... I see them doing it on software today and then convert it to a program for a CNC machine to cut out.

Yeah the intros can be brutal on them... But the information is really well explained and I love the inside views and how they relate it some sort of bench setup illustration.
 
I'm guessing that today's "risk management" people might have an issue with the "running on the wheel extension" demo shown at the end of the video!

Thanks for posting. It's interesting to see the concepts broken down so clearly.
