I just bought my first shop-vac, which is a 16gal 5.75hp unit.

Is there any reason why I should continue using my house vacuum for vacuuming out my apartment's carpets? The shop vac has far superior suction.

The only concern is the suction being too strong and damaging the carpet, but I can't see that happening.

For a carpet, usually the vacuum will have a beater bar to help knock dirt out.

Besides that and possibly noise, I dont see why not. For home use, you may want to get a better filter for the shop vac though. I dont think the filter is all that great, which may re-introduce dust into the space.

We have a miele and panasonic. The miele is for hardwood and area rugs, the panasonic is for carpet. These are the best weve found.

Straight suction will only pick up surface dirt. Carpet requires agitation plus suction to get the dirt out of the fibers, that's what the rotating bar/brushes are for. Use the shop vac for the bag of sugar you tumped over in the kitchen.
