What am I missing where anyone would choose a detached garage over an attached garage?

if you work on things and don't have the option of a second detached one, it isolates odors and its also safer from a fire perspective which could be a legitimate concern with uptick in battery powered things.

I recall near our friends in treasure island the burned house with the "thanks Ryobi" sign on it...

This seems to be what many here like or close. Plain and simple. No frills...This is 1300 sq ft.. not including a basement. In the 40s

and 50s these were the norm here but mostly stucco.

What am I missing where anyone would choose a detached garage over an attached garage? A separate, second detached garage absolutely but given the choice attached is always the way to go.

The attached garage is a blessing and a curse. It’s great in that I can not get wet if it’s raining.

It’s bad because I can’t go out there at night and make a bunch of noise since you can hear it in the house, or if the babies are sleeping. Also this child has put the fear of god into me and I do not intend on ruining his sleep.

My thrill is the engineering and design and old world craftsmanship.

But today I will build smaller with the emphasis on structure, form, and function and I am very energy conscious.

Bigger used to be better. I like space and don't like clutter..
But now design and maintenance free is my thrill.
Once I cared about resale value. No more because time isn't on my side..resale value means nothing if you are belly up.

My dad always said side loading garage, which I think is true when possible…he also said six windows across, which may imply the width should be a certain amount, because my example doesn’t have six. These days a home’s front often seems narrow to fit the lot….now I’m not speaking from experience as our house is a 1951 1300 sq ft

I’d never buy an attached garage. I’d take more home floor space over it. I don’t want the smells, the wasted space, etc. it really isn’t too much to ask to walk ten steps to a garage, if my vehicle is even in it. How many folks fill their garages with junk and put cars outside?

That's what a dry basement is for...house stuff..

On the east coast it has a 10 ft. Basement.
This example is just over 2300 sq. ft which does not count the basement or garage of course.

I guess I don't have smells but my projects stop at light woodworking and car maintenance. With the brutal winters here I can't imagine it being detached. I also am a firm believer that garages are for cars and not junk...I keep both cars and the motorcycle in my 2-car with plenty of room to spare. Practically, since mine is heated the shared wall with the house is more efficient too.

I see lots of open garage doors on the weekends and the 2 car garage is filled with junk.
