Interesting

Today, coffee is a giant global industry employing more than 20 million people. This commodity ranks second only to petroleum in terms of dollars traded worldwide. With over 400 billion cups consumed each year, coffee is the world's most popular beverage.

Living in the middle of flyover country, good coffee is hard to find locally.

We do have Starbucks if you call that good.
Dunkin Donuts and 8 O'Clock are available and they're both good.
And for everyone that hates Folgers, I'm with you. But try some of their "Gourmet Supreme" It's much different than the watered down stuff they normally try to pass off as coffee. It's actually not too bad.

When we travel we usually stop at McDonalds for coffee, regardless of where we eat, as it's about the only decent coffee consistently available at various hours. Sometimes you find a place that has let it sit too long, but they'll usuually make a fresh pot if you ask. Starbucks is usually too expensive unless you get the brew, and we've found the McDonalds brew to sometimes be better than Starbucks. Around here they use Seattle's Best coffee.

As a teen I worked at Dunkin Donuts, they had the bags of beans date coded and you had to get rid of the beans if they were over six months old. It might be different now, but at least at one time they had good coffee.

I have zero tastes for liquor, but I am very fussy when it comes to coffee. My experience is that you only get really top notch coffee in good restarants with large batch commercially machines.

But I have to agree with you...for the most part, its difficult to beat McDonald's coffee.

I can understand you all having a problem getting good coffee when you are out. I used to be able to drink folgers in the red can, and did for years. Then started buying beans and grinding my own. Now I go the whole nine yards and do the french press method. This produces a very strong, but smooth cup of coffee. Now when I go out, all coffee's are weak and bitter. I almost can never drink coffee out unless I put cream and sugar in it. (I drink my home brew black)

For a long time I was buying my beans from www.coffeebeandirect.com they roasted the beans that day and the price is killer. But you have to buy 5 lbs minimum.

I found the whole bean coffee they sell at Sam's club (members mark brand) for $12 you get 2.5 lbs. and it's really good. I use the breakfast blend. But I've tried all three blends they have and they are all okay.

Oh I have a hand grinder too, so I don't over heat the beans.

As msparks said, once you have real good coffee, you can't drink the commercially available coffees without adding things to them.

I myself prefer drinking either Greek(no sugar) or Turkish coffee(a little sugar) in those small cups. I have a brass hand grinder and a copper jezveh from Turkey for this purpose. I haven't met anyone who hasn't like the coffee I make.

Hmmm...I'm impressed, Critic. I would have thought that Aldi's (insert Costco/Sam's/----'s/whomever's) lowball brand would be your coffee of choice. SB's offerings are at a bit of a premium, wouldn't you say?

In this case, it appears that I'm the tightwad by not insisting on my perfect cup of coffee and settling for the Big Red Tub when found on sale

Yeah, I'm not too fond of Folgers either- they usually buy it for our office though. Chase & Sanborn is another coffee best suited for repaving streets.

I currently use Costco House Blend whole bean coffee and grind 'er up fresh. Pretty good stuff.

Wow- I haven't heard of 8 o'clock and Bokar blend coffee in over 30+ years- they used to sell it at A&P when we had those stores way-out-west in ancient history.

Still think one of the absolute BEST cups of coffee I ever had was on Amtrak. Unbelievably outstanding.

Yuuuck..worst coffee ever (IMHO). Its a matter of taste though.

Right now I am drinking 8 O,Clock Columbian. I am in no way saying its great coffee, but its what I use.

I normally just boil water in the Microwave and dump the freshly ground beans in there for about 2 minutes. Then I run it through a filter. I make 12 ounces in the morning only.

I agree the French Press makes pretty good coffee but unfortunately you get too many coffee solids in there which has been shown to negate the health aspects of coffee. yea, yea I know-next year they might be proven good for you.

Starbucks has many types of coffee, so it's hard to say that it's bad or good; it depends on which type you get. I think their House Blend is nasty, but some of their varietals are good.

Hope you're careful with that microwave water boiling -- my mother recently blew up her microwave boiling a cup of water in it. Blew the door open and sprayed hot water across the kitchen; fortunately, she wasn't in front of it! Killed the microwave, too.

We also had an employee -- some years ago -- who was heating up coffee in the office kitchen. She took it out of the microwave and it "erupted" all over her, seriously burning her torso. I think the coffee got superheated.

Yep, good coffee. I rarely go anymore, though, as I'm tired of waiting in line behind people who need fancy blended drinks just to get them to pour coffee in a cup for me.

Other than that, finding good coffee out in the world is about impossible. The junk that passes for coffee in gas stations, donut shops, etc., is for emergency use only.

When I go to starbucks I will get a shot of espresso in a small coffee. That will get it close to tasting okay. The cost is a little more but worth it.

Next time you go to a coffee shop ask for "a shot in the dark" that's what they call it.

That is an excellent tasting, readily available coffee (Columbian, brown bag). I don't care as much for the other 8 O'Clocks. If you ever have the chance to try Tim Horton's, do so. Being a Canadian chain, they've always been in the Buffalo area, but are starting to balloon out to PA and OH now too. REALLY good coffee.
