With the advent of YouTube repair videos, I’ve really gotten into repairing neglected two-stroke equipment. Just gifted my little brother with a limbing saw, an Echo CS310 that I pieced together from two parts saws. Picked up a Stihl FS130r from a seller who was less than truthful. He fired the trimmer up, opened it up twice and shut it down quickly. Fired it up this morning and found out why he shut it off so quickly. The idle was crazy high. What I discovered was someone had cross threaded the idle (LA) screw. Fortunately, they hadn’t wrecked the threads and i was able to get the screw in correctly. Had to retune it, and now it’s a weed whacking beast. It’s hard to believe how strong the 4-Mix engines are. Took it to my overgrown garden and mowed down everything in sight and it didn’t even grunt.

Love my Lawn Boy mowers. Lots better than a 4 stroke in tall glass.

Recently picked up 2 old non- working Echo SRM-210 string trimmers off of Craigslist who had 7 various gas trimmers for repair. I passed on the SRM-2100. One of the 210s appeared clean and was a 2005 unit but the rope was seized. The second 210 is a 2008 that pulled with compression but looked more weathered and had a seized head. Initially I figured I could piece together 1 working unit for home use. I was able to free up the seized one using PB and MMO in the cylinder and it fired up with a squirt of fuel. The other one with the seized head turned out to be a fully rusted clutch bearing and the gearbox had bad bearings. That engine also ran fine. Eventually I rebuilt both Zama carbs, replaced the fuel lines and priming bulbs, and reconditioned the entire power heads. I replaced the clutch housing and will install a used gearbox for the 2nd one.
Since then I also picked up a free Shindaiwa T230X 2008 vintage and an Echo GT-225 from 2019 and restored both to running condition.
I also added an used Echo PB-250LN handheld leaf blower.
These 2 stroke Zama (Echos) and Walbro (on the Shindaiwa) carburetors are fairly easy to refurb and gasket and diaphragm kits are relatively cheap and abundant.prior to these I have never worked on 2 stroke other than a 0.12 glow engine from a RC10GT.
