HONDA SERVICE INTERVAL

Quick question. My 2001 Accord owner's manual calls for a coolant drain and fill at 120,000 miles (severe or normal service). I purchased the car used and the prior owner already had the coolant system serviced by Honda at 80,000 miles. I have the records and the coolant is genuine Honda blue to back it up.

The manual states, "...Exchange coolant at 120,000 miles or ten years, then at 60,000 miles or 60 months thereafter..."

So, would I be correct to assume I'm on the 60,000 mile / 60 month track (since the coolant was already changed prior to the OE requirement)? Good operation, no concerns. Just not sure I should shell-out the cash.

i would get the fluid from Honda and do it myself. or flush it and switch to something else. you don't have to spend a lot of money

Yes, you are on the 60k/5 years, whichever comes first, schedule now.

It's cheap enough to do this when doing it yourself, I would, and did get the Honda coolant.. just a few bucks more, and your looking a 60k intervals... with all the coolant "wars" going on, it's just not as simple as it was years back. All i could find was pre-mix, but I think you can order the 100% coolant online.

Just wondering if you've had the timing belt/water pump service done? For our 01 Civic the coolant was replaced when the tb/wp service was done at ~110k. In your case, just assuming the previous owner had that all done at 80k?

fyi, the standard Honda coolant is a premix (50/50)*, making a complete system flush difficult unless you remove the black drain(s).** My advice, don't wait the 60k, do a radiator drain and fill sooner using Honda Type II. Then just do that process more often than the OM says, perhaps half as long.

* yes the concentrate can be found in 'quarts' online, but with shipping is pricey(er), IMO.
** Even then not guaranteed to get it all out, but yes, most.

Yes, timing belt and water pump was replaced at 104K. So I almost could be certain the coolant was also replaced at 104K. Also, the prior owner had the coolant exchanged in 2004, then again in 2007 - Honda type 2. I think I answered my own questions...coolant service can wait a while on the 60K / 60,000 mile interval.
