Honda paywalls garage door opener

Am I missing something or is the article rage bait? The MyQ basic use is free. The MyQ up tiered subscriptions were not, so the user can pay for MyQ integration with their car, or they can use the app for free on their phone, or they can purchase the optional Home link mirror, which was always part of higher trims

I don't know of any any full-service app-controlled car services that are without subscriptions.
Most likely. It got me angry before I even looked into it.

Manufacturers won’t stop trying. Financing and subscriptions are predictable revenue sources. They can be tracked and forecasted very easily vs vehicle purchasing and service work is sporadic and unpredictable. They like predictable reoccurring revenue like any business or individual would.

Easier said than done. On my CHR for example, the communication module is a pass through for the Bluetooth mic, so if you disconnect the module, you lose the ability to talk hands free.
The only other option is to de-solder the e-sim chip to stop any communication.

Some cares still use a physical sim, so these should be pretty straightforward.
They have made it hard to bypass anything today. I have to wonder though what would really happen if someone prevented a new car from communication with the outside world. Would it just shut down after a preset time?

I highly doubt it, as that would be a liability for now at least. But I wouldn't be surprised if it was programmed to trigger a check engine light or some other warning fault so that the user brings it over to a dealer.

I can also see that the lobby eventually may push for a mandate that all vehicles need to be constantly connected to the manufacturer, likely citing cybersecurity risks, emissions, or some other safety related excuse. If that passes, they can render a vehicle useless once it disconnects from their servers.

That is definitely a possibility and a move towards a smartphone type usage, where the hardware might be yours, but the software running the vehicle is never yours and you're bound by a end user agreement which can be revoked at any time by the manufacturer.

I read about a guy whose Subaru started running badly after he stayed at a mountain cabin out of cell service for an extended period. He took it to a dealer and the dealer had to reflash the ECU accordingly. I asked for more clarification and never got a response.

Sounds like it's already happening.

I wish my outback didnt have a built in opener..
you can use it at all times don't even need a key.
only one I've ever heard of wired like that.

So you leave it parked outside.. smash window and open garage.. ugh.

Once you get to the level of "smash window", most houses can be entered. In our house, you don't even have to go in through a door or window - all you need is a utility knife and you can slash through the wall (vinyl siding/foam sheathing/drywall) .
